AM2 will have 1 way and 2 way Opterons and DDR2. The 2 way ones will be for the "dual dual core" 4x4 platform.

Now that would make 4x4 worthwhile, 2 cheap opterons overclocked to 3GHz.

Hehe not to mention the scheduling being NUMA aware to cope with the opteron's asymmetrical architecture..

Here you are Jokester, its from the Inq so take it with a pinch of salt:

"The Socket AM2 line-up will consist of 1200 series of processors, but the 2200 series will be added to the AM2 mix.

Until now, you could buy a workstation Opteron for single socket only, but with the imminent arrival of the Socket 4x4 platform, the company will allow manufacturers to have two Socket AM2 processors on a single motherboard."

Hmmm, the AMD slides I've seen were specific about it being FX chips, I'll see if I can find anything else on it.

Hmm, interesting. Soon, I might need to build a quad-core AMD system for doing film editing. Would a 2 x dual-core Opteron system be a better bet than a "4x4" system? How does a "4x4" system compare to a quad-core opteron system?

I'm not sure anyone can really answer that until we see some reviews, but I guess they're pretty much the same
