Opteron Dual Core ........Remove IHS ? temps odd.......

Hey all running orthos on my Dual Core Opteron 170 gives me temps:

Core #0 54C
Core #1 70C

CPU 'temp' is reading as 41c load

Large Difference between cores there.......guessing one core has rubbish contact with the IHS.........easy to remove from a dual core ? Iv seen it done many times on single cores, and can find many pics of single core opterons with no IHS........but NO pics of the inside of a dual core with IHS removed............

Any input people ?

I've seen this before! Could just be poor contact on the IHS like you say. There aren't many 170's after i searched on google but as the 165's identical apart from the multiplier i searched for that and got a few hits. If you go on google and type '165 ihs' you should find instances where people have had these issues and how this method has helped them. There are even some good pics of IHS'less 165's!

I have considered removing the IHS on mine but as it runs no hotter than 51 degrees C under full Orthos load @ 2.88ghz i'm ok for now! It is very tempting though and would probably help the temp issue you are seeing!

Removed mine on my 165 slightly lower temps in general but one core is still about 10c different from the other on idle

have reseated it tried different heat sinks nothing worked

got my overclock stable at 2.8 (2.6 before) but in general not really worth the risk i was expecting a dramatic difference in temp

saying that it definitely allows better heat transfer and i think stops the heat building up to melting point as long as you vent it out of your case

thought i had killed it when i chipped the silicon with the razor but it seems OK

hmmm yes found a low res pic of the 165 now, seems its one huge core and not 2 like I was thinking, LOTS of capaciters n stuff right near the edge of the IHS, hmmm / me wonders some more

i have removed 2 now, one from a 146 and the other from my brothers 165 (mine already had it removed when i bought already had it removed)

I used the IHS from the 146 to see how deep i needed to go in, then taped the razor blade with ducktape to stop me going too far.

taking the IHS from a dual core is more risky because the little chips are closer to the outside... so more chance of catching them.


edit: you may want to look at your heatsink too... just to make sure its not going to cause too much trouble.

I did my 165, as per previous post, put a little tape on the blade so you don't go to deep.

It's easy enough, just go slow

I have read that on the optys one of the cores wasnt calibrated so the temp reads wrong. However which one is reporting the correct temps, I dont know. I like to go with the lower one

i have a 3c diff idle, 1c load (according to core temp.) with IHS removed

i have about 7-10*C difference on idle temp and 1-3*C difference on load.

does not bother me anymore, as long as load temps are good 55-60 now a days (8800GTS made improvement cos it blows hot air via PCI slot)

I near sure most of these guys put naked Opterons under water as this is easier to accomplish than any of the hsf methods as crushing a core is the last thing anyone wants to do

my 3800+ has around a 8c difference between the cores this is b4 and after removing the IHS.
