Hello,

sorry if this has been asked before but I spent like over an hour fiddling now and I still can't get C&Q to work properly on a new HTPC build I'm doing, what am I missing?

  • Opteron 170
  • ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (#1009)
  • Microsoft MCE 2005
  • Cool n Quiet control enabled in BIOS (everything on AUTO in BIOS except memory timings)
  • AMD Opteron™ Processor with AMD PowerNow!™ Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16
  • Minimal Power Management (selected in power options)

Hmmm I did have this working many months ago (in a WinXP machine?), probably done something wrong this time, or maybe missed something obvious. Now i think about it when I did have it working I had installed the ASUS C&Q driver (v1.2.2.2) and not the thing from the AMD site, but this time I installed the AMD thing. When I remembered this I tried to install the ASUS version but it wont let me says "driver already installed", so I uninstalled the AMD one and tried again but no joy, it still wont let me?

This is the webpage from AMD for opteron stuff, what should I be using from there?

One thought, this is the first time I used MCE2005, its a fresh install and I haven't connected it to the web for updates, but its a fresh SP2 install from CD . . . Is there something that needs updating?

Through me a bone pls! :p

Are you using CPU-Z to tell you the clock speed?
yeah v1.37, wondered if there was something weird going on so I am now using that 'AMD Power Monitor' thing, still no joy

I just been searching these forums and the web for hints/clues and I remembered that i didn't ever test this with a multi-core before, it was testing working last feb using an Opteron 146? (Does Cool n Quiet work with multi-core?)

Gonna do a fresh install soon because I think I did something wrong, will make sure to get a fresh 'GHOST' backup so I can roll-back and test a few things out. Will probably use the drivers from the CD because I'm a bit confused what I should be using from the AMD site? :o :D

No problem, thought I missed something there!

Bah still no joy, clean install soon and install drivers from the ASUS CD, that was the last thing I did months ago that got this to work . . .

AMD Opteron™ Processor Utilities and Updates

AMD Opteron™ Processor with AMD PowerNow!™ Technology Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2.16

"This driver supports Single- and Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ processors on Windows XP SP2, Windows 2003 SP1 x84 and x64 Editions."

Is Microsoft MCE2005 the same as Windows XP with regards to this AMD software?

Have you tried to put the memory timings on Auto in the BIOS and see what happens?

After reading this thread I did as suggested (X2 4800) and it is nicely running at 988 MHz at 1.088 V.

Nice one!

No I didn't try it yet with with *auto* for memory, will give it a go, just finishing fresh install lol :)

Tell me what you did then? and what mobo you using?

My mobo is an "old" ASUS A8N Sli-Deluxe.

In fact a week ago you advised me how simply was to move from 3500 Winnie to X2 4800. I did install the drivers from the AMD site, second from the bottom and the first (I need to check that one) on top. Said "hello" to the BIOS (as suggested by you :) ) and enabled C&Q in the BIOS. I left my memory on Auto.

It had not worked until this evening I read your thread and changed the Power management. That was it. No clean install, etc.

I believe there should not be difference between Opterons (dual core) and X2 install-wise, but I mihgt well be wrong.

Good luck and post your successful story (I am sure you will get it working). :)

Cheers,
Jordan

ta, thanks for that . . . I was just wondering why they have different sections, one for X2 and the other Opteron?

  • AMD Athlon™ 64/X2 Processors
  • AMD Opteron™ Processor

I know that Opterons have been made of better quality silicon chips. Apart from that I cannot find anything else that supposes different drivers. Especially for Skt 939.

I have found this on the tech. specifications.

Anyone else that knows better?

Ok I'm just waiting for a bunch of 250Gb disks to format, had to get some other stuff done.

Anyhow you could possibly help us out, any chance you could take your memory off 'auto' and set some 'safe' manual timings, then boot back into windows and see if C&Q still works please?

I did change to Manual and it is still running nicely C&Q. Obviously this is not the answer.

I had a look at the drivers on the AMD site, the version for Opterons and X2 is exactly the same (number-wise) and was released in July. I take it as an indication that there should not be difference.

Well thanks a lot for doing that lil test anyway, Its not bad new actually as if memory had to be on auto as well as everything else that would have been a bit too much for me (I got some rude-boy 2GB OCZ-PC3200 with nice timings, can't have that running at CAS3!).

Which C&Q driver did you install again? (from my link or?)

I installed the original driver from my ASUS CD. Did not bother to go to the AMD site.

Have you tried the original ASUS drivers? I see that you used the AMD ones.

Could it be the MCE5?

In fact my memory is Patriot XBLK. I have just added another Gb tonight and it had automatically put it at 333 MHz, so I had to set it manually back to 400 MHz. I could not get 2-2-2-5 timings either. I am going to play with this tomorrow.

I didn't try the ASUS/CD drivers today. I installed the latest ones from AMD and of course that didn't work, so then I uninstalled the AMD C&Q drivers and tried to install the ASUS/CD ones but it wouldn't let me . . . says 'Driver already installed, uninstall and try again'.

Apparently MCE2005 is WindowsXP (minus a wee bit of networking stuff) with a special app built in called Media-Centre. The drivers are the same except the ones to do with TV-Cards/tuners, MCE has its own system there.

I will try the CD drivers on a fresh install, hopefully that will work (it did when I last tried 6 months ago, different machine, same kit).

It wouldn't be the first time that I came unstuck by using drivers that are 'too new' :o

Peace be with you, I will update in a few hours! :D
