Hi

Sounds a daft question I know. But does the HS/fan that comes with a retail version of the Opteron 180 already have thermal paste applied? It appears to have something on the bottom of the HS already.

It's just that the only CPU I've fitted before was an OEM Athlon 4000+

Would not like to install it and it blows up!

Thanks....

Thanks folks.

New CPU installed and appears OK.

Tried 2 copies of SP04 and kept any eye on core temps. At rest seems around 30C and under stress, it reaches around 45/46C. This seem about right?

Final question (and I know it's been discussed here a number of times). But I'm still unsure whether I need to install the AMD Dual core optimiser??? At the moment I have not installed it and not noticed any problems yet. Tomb Raider Anniversary appears fine and tried running 3Dmark05 and they look OK.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the reply.

I did purchase some AS5 at the same time, as was not originally sure if it came with a HS/fan and thought I might have to buy one separate. But the stock cooler appears reasonable, it's one of the "heat pipe" designs.

I'll let it bed in before having a go at overclocking it, even if I can just get it up one notch, say to 2.6... it's then equivalent to a Opteron 185 and I think I'd be happy at that.

for example far cry played at 10 times the speed - amusing for a while

better explanation in post above lol

Interesting. Tried FarCry for around half an hour and it appears to run fine.

So I've downloaded the Optimiser and will try it if I get problems.

Thanks for all the replies.

Just an update.

Did not install AMD's Dual Core Optimiser in the end and after 10 days of pretty hard gaming... no problems and that's even with some of the games that other people have reported problems with! Strange...

Think I'll leave well alone as things appear OK.

PS. Checked add/remove programs and it definitely isn't there.
