opteron series

1 way is uni processor, 2 way is a mobo with 2 cpus and 8 way is a mobo with 8 cpus i think. Imagine folding on that beast!

so does that mean you need 2 cpu sockets on the motherboard to run a 2 way series or will it run just the same as a 1way cpu on a standard 939 single cpu board?

The opterons that people are using in "normal" systems, for instance for gaming, are the Socket 939 single dual-core CPU versions - mainly the 165, 170 and so on. They're basically just relabelled and underclocked Athlon 64 X2s. The other Opterons use socket 940 and are entirely different.

ok so the 165, 170, 175 and 180 are the only 939 dual core opterons and then the 2 and 8 way are 940?

Correct. The 200 and 800 series are skt940 and need ECC memory as well. The only real difference between the 200 and 800 are the extra Hypertransport connections on the 800 series.

Sort of...
the 1-series CPU's (144-154) are single core skt939
the 165,170,175,180 are dual core skt939 cpus
the 2 series are skt 940 (265 etc etc)

1 series cpus are the ones non-server orientated people are interested in as they are more 'mainstream' and are more 'unofficially' supported buy the skt939 standard motherboards. AFAIK all 1 series cpus work in skt939 motherboards although the manufacturers cannot 'officially' support them eg There is no mention from Asus that there A8n32 motherboard supports the 'opteron' range yet they work fine with that board (I have a 165 in mine).
