Opterons vs Athlons in encoding?

Whats the performance difference @ stock, opterons are supposed to be designed for this sort of thing right?

Same chips rebranded as far as i know..

Depends on which ones. Some A64's only have 512 cache whereas all opterons have 1 meg. ie
Opty 146 @ 2ghz has 1 meg cache
A64 Venice 3200 @ 2ghz has 512kb cache

Also at stock speed i can get my opteron to run at a lot lower voltage = cooler

they are the same chips although some athlons have less cache, opterons are just the cream of the crop because they are intended for stressful environments where reliability is paramount.

What about the 940 opterons? And what opteron at stock is equal to my 3700?

I always thought that amd opterons were designed for servers since they can run 8 way while you can only get single a64s on one mobo. Dont amd have anything to compete with the likes of itanium, xeon etc?

The opteron? You can get dual dual core opterons on one board IIRC, but you can definitely get dual opterons.

only some, and there hard to find, more common are the 2xx series (2 way) and the 1xx series (1 way)
