Hi, I am hoping to get buy a new optical drive for the PC which supports DVD DL - R wrting. on the OC site there is a Samsung drive that supports this.
How ever there is both a IDE & Sata formats !
I take it that I should get the Sata one as access speed will be slightly better and I have 2 or 3 spare Sata ports on my MoBo ! ?
I current use one Sata port on my MoBo for my Sata 1 Hard Drive.

Many thanks :)

SATA and PATA optical drives perform at the same speed since the read speed of the disk is still significantly slower than both communication protocols. SATA is now preferred since PATA ports are becoming scarce and the cables are huge and nasty. However, if you don't have room for SATA, PATA will do just fine.

I would just get a SATA one because of the tidier cables. There's no performance benefit in going with SATA as the transfer rates are no where near saturating an IDE bus.

Only thing is that SATA drives can on rare occasions not be picked up properly if you have a RAID setup.

Sata it is then, I am not using RAID set up so will be OK on that front. I also have some spare Sata leads from my MoBo purchase a few years back.
So is it a simple plug in the leads and boot up ?
There is no BIOS setting I have to change ?

As long as you haven't disabled any SATA ports on your motherboard yeah ;)

But the O/S should detect it straight off really.
