Optical drive making boot up / read noise randomly (whilst empty)

Bit of an issue with a new build

The ODD (dvd-rw) keeps making noise like the noise it would make at boot up/when initially reading some thing - like a high pitched buzz / churning, not just a flicking noise. (followed by the green activity light).
It does this what seems like completley at random, some times twice within 10 seconds, other times a minute or so goes by. The drive is empty whilst this is happening.
note: the drive is working fine otherwise, have had disks in it, installing etc. It only seems to start acting this way after windows has booted up, as if something is trying to access it or is forcing that kind of activity.

It is a fresh install of windows 7 64 bit on a new build.
Asus P8z77-v mobo, have had the drive in 2 different sata ports.
SSD and HDD are working fine.
All that had been installed is the mobo drivers, gfx drivers etc
Windows updates ad thats it.

Disabling the drive in the device manager stops the issue, but that's not really fixing it.

Any thoughts?
Help appreciated.

Its quite a common problem with optical drives, when you open windows explorer for example it may be refreshing the drive lists which causes it to seek to the DVD in order to index it in the navigation tree.

Not really sure what 'fixes' it, but its not something which is wrong. There may be some settings living somewhere that can help to prevent it if you search around its not uncommon.

really? hmm. The thing is, it does it when i'm literally doing nothing. Like if i had it enabled now, it would have done what i mentioned whilst i was typing this out. The boot up/buzz/churning noise coupled with the drives activity light (drive still empty). Quite sure it never happened on my old system.

No, that doesn't sound like normal behaviour when empty - mine doesn't do it. Have you tried swapping out the SATA cable?

i've tried putting it in to a different sata port. That didn't fix it. Haven't tried changing the actual cable, will give that a go if i can find a spare sata cable.

but i would have thought if it was a cable fault like that, then the drive itself wouldnt work either (i.e. not able to properly read cd's/dvd's / install from them...but it does that just fine). It doesn't show up with any issue in device manager, lists it as working properly.
