optical on asus x99 deluxe

hi guys cant get my head around it i can get the 5.1 setup to work with onboard sound but i dont get any settings like speaker configuration or anything. but if i plug in the headphones i get all the option so how can i get this with optical cable.

Typically the only options you get with digital out are

PCM or bitsteam
Maximum bitrate/sampling
Any DD/DTS live encoding

So are you trying to get 5.1 to work over SPDIF instead of analog outputs?

Likely reason is that unless sound card supports AC3/DD or DTS encoding (or source material is already in it) it can only output two channel stereo PCM over SPDIF.
Also selecting SPDIF as output in Windows Sound Playback settings bypasses sound card's software

Though buggy so and so software can't be excluded as Asus basically uses marketroids as designers.

You need to install realtek hd audio manager.

Don't think you will get speaker options for optical. Normally it'd just chuck the signal out for a 5.1 amp to deal with.
