So I managed to snap the end of the Optical cable whilst plugged into my AV receiver.

As the ps4 only does optical I want to try and use the spare coaxial ports on my AV receiver. If I get a cable for around £5 thst has optical on one end and coaxial on the other, will that work?

Such a cable shouldn't exist. If it does, and it genuinely has just an optical connection on one end and a coaxial (RCA) connection on the other with no intervening hardware then it's a con.

Optical is a light signal; literally very fast flashes of light. Coaxial is an electrical signal; IOW it's a voltage. It's not possible to change one to the other by simply changing the end-of-cable connection. This is like trying to smell the number 9.

What you need is an optical to coaxial convertor box. Do a Web search.

The box will have an optical input connection on one side and a coaxial output connection on the other.

Thanks Lucid, I managed to break the plastic stuck in the optical port of my receiver. It was cheap nasty plastic that broke to bits with few careful taps with a screw drivers. Ordered a new optical cable now :)

Yeah, why limit yourself to lossy/compressed DD 5.1?

Didn't know there was such a big difference between HDMI audio and Optical

I'm happy with Optical, if I want to use the DD 5.1 via HDMI I woukd have to route the PS4 to the AV receiver and then from there to the TV. This would mean the Receiver needed to be on just to play the PS4 even when I'm playing games that don't need surround sound.

Not if the avr has hdmi pass through.

Why would you play games on a crappy tg sound system when you have a avr?

I only use the AVR for certain games like Horizon Zero Dawn and NIOH that add to the experience. Games like PES 2020 adn NBA2K20 dont need it

Not sure about what you said, I'd have it like this PS4 > AVR > TV with a HDMI connected to each... so to play the PS4 with I'd need the AVR regardless of what I'm doing on the PS4 just to get a picture

Never understood why people do this. When I had an AVR it was set to always turn on with the TV, otherwise what's the point?

Surround sound always adds to the experience IMO.

I mean, different horses for different courses and everything, but I don't think I've used any TV speakers for over 10 years.

My Harmony remote switches on my AVR when you turn on the TV.

each to thier own I guess. My Samsung TV has pretty good speakers which are good enough for me for most things, don't see the point in watching Come Dine With Me in 5.1 lol
