Optical to phono

Hi guys,

I recently replaced my panny VT with the LG e7 but I didn't realise LG doesn't have phono connections. Has anyone used a optical to phone converter? My old av receiver doesn't have optical in and the TV doesn't have phono out. I plan to upgrade the av unit soon but I'm looking a quick fix. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I had a decent pioneer avr but it died. So I pulled out an old unit I had to make do. It's be fine for me to be honest and I want to fix the sound until I come back from my holiday. This is why I want a quick solution. I will replace the unit with atmos equipment in a few months.

The little DAC boxes (Optical In to Phono Out) for £10-£15 are fine. I've used a few of the eSync boxes without issue. There are versions with a wall wart 240V PSU and others that come with a USB power lead to run from one of the TV's USB ports for power.

Bear in mind they only convert PCM stereo to analogue stereo. Make sure the telly's Optical out is set to PCM and not Bitstream / Dolby.

Well the converter didn't work even when i selected PCM. On the plus side the wife said the new AV receiver is my Christmas present.
That's really quite odd. Optical Out on the TV to Optical In on the converter. Then Stereo Phono Out on the converter to a stereo phono input on your receiver (but not the Phono TT input for a turntable).

Did you remember to set the Panny VT audio out to PCM?

Did you buy a Phono to Optical converter by mistake?

Is there anything you have to do on the old receiver to select the analogue phono input rather than any Optical or Coax socket associated with the input?

maybe PCM sample rate too high eg >= 96Khz

EDIT: wrong freeview only 48Khz
- snarloas which specific optical to analogue RCA did you buy ?
- could have bought an optical to digital coax box from the outset ?

I have a LG e7 now. It was working on the panny VT as it had phono to phono. I deffo purchased a optical in to phono out. I can't select optical in on the receiver as it doesn't have an optical port. Also yes I selected pcm on the LG as its pcm or auto. It could be the dac I bought on ebay might be junk also. Don't worry about it to much it's getting binned for some new atmos gear soon.

You could try it, depends on what sampling and frequency rate that box supports.

If you decide to replace your AVR, you'll need complete set of 5.1 speakers, as that Phillips hts 3357 is a HTIB. The speakers and subwoofer are propiertary speakers.
