Thinking of building a new gaming PC but I've not had one now for about seven years so I'm well out of the loop.

I'm not buying new monitors at the moment and my old one does 1900x1200.

Putting supply issues to the side, what GPU (Nvidia or AMD) will be sufficient to max out settings on current games at that resolution?

Was thinking of aiming my sights at a 3070 or 3070ti if I can get lucky with an FE drop but would that be overkill at that res?

It was so long ago that my last GPU was a R9 280X so even a 3060ti would be a massive improvement.

What's the refresh rate of your current 1900 x 1200 monitor ? Also are you going to update the monitor in the near future and if so what resolution are you aiming for on your next monitor upgrade ?

60Hz, not until next year at the earliest and don't know.
 
It's probably worth upgrading the monitor aswell especially if you want to get the most out of the cards by running free-sync / Gsync and also enjoying the smoothness of a higher refresh rate if your current monitor is only 60hz.
 
The 3060 Ti would be the best bang for buck & definitely run well at that res. 3070 is ok too, not sure it's worth the price premium. The 3070 Ti definitely isn't.
 
The monitor is as important as any other component IMO. 165hz 1440p IPS monitors can be found for sub-£300 these days.

The real answer is buy the best card you can afford at this time with the best price to performance and really the card from Nvidia that does that is the 3080 FE at the top end and the 6800xt for AMD at the msrp price of the reference model. BUT doesn't mean you have to go this high, just saying that the 3080 and 6800xt at MSRP FE and ref prices are the best price to performance in the high end.


If you want to save a bit of money and still be fine at 1440p and 4k get the 3070 from nvidia or the 6800 from AMD.

Honestly all the cards from 3060ti and up are great cards from nvidia but the price to performance starts to matter so for example a 3070ti and 3080ti are bad buys no matter how you cut it. Same goes with some amd cards too so just work out what you can afford to the performance.

All the cards from a 3060ti and up will be great for a 1440p monitor in the future and will even play games at 4k with a few settings turned down.

So again get what you can afford now as all cards are overkill for 1900x 1200 @60hz but futureproof for your next monitor upgrade. Then start saving for your monitor upgrade.

3060ti, 3070/ti would all be fine at 1440P.

With card prices dropping on a weekly basis I'd be tempted to hold out and get both at the same time or even get the monitor first then the card in a couple of months.

I would look at the Intel 11400F + B560 for the platform as this with save quite a bit of cash which can go into the GPU and it matches the much more expensive AMD 5000 series and Intels K chips @1440P.

Not built it yet but I don't need to scrimp.

Plan was an 850w psu, Ryzen 9 and 32gb ram.

Moving house shortly so I was waiting to see what space I was getting to set up my desk etc before deciding on a monitor set up but l'll build the pc as soon as I can source a gpu.

Not desperate so it'll be when I can bag an FE card and not before.
 
Why no one using first numbers? Becoz there is Huge difference in 3440x1440 vs 2xxx x1440

So when ever any one say 1440p its only half of a monitor.
 
1440p - 3060ti or 3070

If you're sticking with 1080p at 60hz honestly a regular 3060 would be more than capable. My 3060ti smashes most games at 1440p.

Looks good thanks. I might just buy that now. Can always stick it on a wall mount behind my desk if I need to.

I'll see what's available at the next FE drop. Appreciate the input but probably won't go as low as a 3060. If I can get a 3070 or 3070ti then that sounds as if it'd be ideal.

I was looking at a 6800XT as the midnight black card looks nice as well as offering good performance but the trouble is you can't buy reference cards in the UK off the AMD site at the moment and I don't think they drop them anywhere else.
