Okay, firstly, apologies. I know that questions on best resolutions have been done to death so if someone can link me to a post or topic that answers my question I will thank you in advance :).

I have two questions really on this topic, though I'm not sure the second is entirely related but I'll ask it anyway.

I have a Sony KDL-32V4000 to which I currently have connected an Xbox 360 Arcade console (Jasper) which has been upgraded with my Elite's left overs from when it died. I also have the HD-DVD addon drive. If I leave the Xbox to auto-select the optimal resolution, the EDID from the screen tells the console to set itself to 1360x768. Is this the best resolution I should be running at? My understanding has always been that most content on the 360 runs at 720p, and as such having the display set to that is best because anything else and the console is being expected to do some scaling. If I do run at 1360x768, will I get any issues at all with playing or running other content? Original Xbox titles for example.

Secondly, and possibly unrelated, I have a problem when watching HD-DVDs that I have only encountered since getting this screen at Christmas last year. I've just kinda ignored it until now. While watching an HD-DVD, at seemingly completely random intervals, the picture will flicked and the screen will 'reset' as if a new source had just been selected. It's a virtually instant thing, but it's enough to drop the picture very briefly. Sometimes, this is also accompanied by a "Secure HDCP Link Lost" message from the 360, followed very quickly by a "Secure HDCP Link Restored" message. I'm just wondering if anyone else has this problem, or has found a solution :).

Thanks for any input on either issue guys/gals.

1360x768 is the standard 720P resolution on pretty much every HDTV that is described as "720P"

Original Xbox titles will be knocked down to standard res anyway I think, although they don't work with the VGA cable.

Thanks for that. I knew about the whole 1360x768 being standard resolution thing, but wasn't entirely sure how that actually correlates with the device you are using at the time.

I should have really stated the console is connected over HDMI. I don't know if that makes any difference to anything?

The Sony up-scaler is better than the 360's internal one, so you should manually set the 360 to 720p and let your screen up-scale for you.

hmmm are you just guessing this?

because the 360 is known to have a decent scaler chip in it and the scaler chips in tv's genrally aint that great.

as for the hd dvd issue, i get a similar thing while watching transformers on hd dvd, the rest are fine though. on transformers the screen will black out for less than a second then be ok again, my tv itself does not respond to this happening at all.

i think it something we're just going to have to live with as i cant see microsoft fixing it anytime soon, but it only happened about 6 times during the film so its not that big of an issue for me.

I will never state things like that based on conjecture. The Bravia series are famous for their upscaling abilities, and over a year ago there was quite an in depth article comparing the Bravia scaler versus the ANA chip in the 360.
