First post in the forums so be gentle!! :)

I have read through a number of posts on here and just have a couple of questions/queries

Having just build my new rig 3 days ago, i have already been bitten by the o/cing bug. (should be in my sig)

Having downloaded and run coolbits for my 7800GT, i used the auto detect optimum settings option and after a couple of minutes it came up with settings of 490/1180. I only at this time have the stock fan on it (it's the overclockers card that was on special this week with COD2 - bargin!)

My question is - is it ok to run at these settings or should i tone it down for a bit first?

Also what do you guys use to actually check the gfx card new settings? just the 3Dmark programs for any issues?

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers (82.65? i think)

I have on just set up the rig three days ago - i ran a basic 3dmark2001 test to set a baseline for the system.

On the orginal drivers it scored 20534 and with the new drivers it scored 20678.

I intend on getting 03 and 05 over the weekend and setting some baselines with these before increasing the settings on the GFX card.

Great site by the way - once i get a bit more reading done - the CPU is next!!!

I had to clock mine back abit from the optimised detection as I got some nast artifact (black triangles) all over the screen in NFS most wanted. The 3d mark stuff especially the more recent 05/06 variety will give you graphics a good stress but the best way to test is with some real world games.

Hi mate,

Welcome to the forums :D

Once you have done the auto detect bit,run the benchmarks 03,05 & look for any artifacts, these will either show as triangle shapes & bigger block shapes if you have gone too far, usually on the core clock.
you also get sparklies, small dots on the screen(they look like they sound sparkly things) usually get these if the memory is clcoked too far.

Test 04 on 3D Mark03 Nature test is good for showing these up.

If you do see any artifacts, just back down 5mhz or so on the clocks & run the benchies again .

You can use the latest version of ATI tool to test your card(works with NVidia cards)

Good luck with the overclocking, once yuour bitten by the bug mate, there's no stopping :p

Cheers

Rob

I just found out my 7800 gtx is @ 430/1.2, it was @ 470/1.3 but whatever.

Anyway i pressed "Detect optimal frequencies" and it came up with 490 / 1.31.

Cheers guys - plan on doing some of the testing over the weekend and will advise accordingly.

I take it the stock cooler is ok for these sort of levels as i am not to concerned with any relevant noise levels etc, not looking for a wisper quiet rig, just a fast one!! :p

Will post some benchies over the weekend from unclocked to clocked card and will see what changes.

Thanks

Right -first go at overclocking my 7800GT.

With everthing on stock my

3dmark2001 - 20643
3dmark2003 - 11456
Not yet downloaded 05/06

CPU still stock- no overclocking.

After clocking my card to 471/1100 (there is still a bit in the tank) my 3dmark2001 score only increased to 20780. Is that right? is this more of a CPU test than a gfx card test.

Not yet had a chance to run the 2003 test or go to the optimal detect frequencies of 490/1180.

2001 is more CPu limited than the other tests so not the best for testing an overclock on your graphics but definately usefull when you crank up the fsb on that processor. to get a good test on that card you defo want to download 05/06 as they will really push it.

Ok - will download tonight (05 & 06) and then turn back to stock to get a benchmark and then crank it up again.

Thanks for that.

Just coming back after running 3dmark03 and my score has increased from 11497 to 12212 by overclocking gfx card only to 471/1100. Will push it further over the weekend but quiet happy with the 7% increase in performance so far. No artifacts etc as far as i can see.

Also no CPU overclocking yet! (still need to understand the whole RAM/divider stuff for that!!)

Runs COD2 fine for about 90mins also at those settings.

Will go to optimum freq of 490/1180 soon and see what happens.
