"Optimum" Monitor size for "At desk, keyboard/mouse" gaming?

Overall I think that 'bigger is better' BUT just as , if not more important sometimes, are the no. of pixels and the panel type.

Am running 1440 27" IPS panel - it is lovely and gives me a smile every time I switch on and use.:)

But the cost of both the monitor and the graphics card(s) to run it makes it a bit expensive.:(

IMO the best 'compromise' is a 27" 1080 panel.

27" is as big as I'd want to go. Any bigger and i'd need to sit further back which isn't possible on my desk.

My older 24" 1200p Asus monitor felt ideal on my previous gaming desk. Now that I have a very large desk 27" 1440p fits right in but I wouldn't go bigger. I'd consider 3-screen setup with 23" 1080p screen if I wanted bigger than 27". Those new 28" (4k) screens should be the max size for a PC screen for gaming.

So I recently upgraded from a 24 inch 1200p on my small desk to a 27 inch 1440p and love it but I now feel that I'm too close to the monitor with my relatively small desk. I would not go 1080p on a 27 inch unless you sit back a good distance. I think 27 inch is about as big as I want to go; in some respects it's a bit too big unless I get a larger desk. :D

I have tried monitors up to 24" in size and also a 32" hdtv and I now have a 23" 1080p monitor and I feel 23" is about right for the distance I am away from the monitor (about 2-3 feet).

23" at 1080p is pinsharp aswell.

IMO the ideal monitor size is basically dependent on how big your desk is, a small monitor will look "lost" on a big desk.

I would say 24". I dont like 1080 at anything smaller and bigger screens are too big for desk work I think.

However if I sat infront of one enough I could probably get myself used to a 27" at most.

I have 27" at 1080p.
Good size for just about everything overall. I also have it on an arm so it becomes the 'cinema' screen in my Man Cave.

I have tried a 27" at 1440 and while gaming looks STUNNING by comparison, I'd have to sit closer for the small details when using things like MSOffice or surfing.

It's posts like this that make me want to shell out a shed load of money on graphics cards and monitors! The only thing that scares me is the grunt required to run games at a high frame rate at 1440p. 27" at 1080p will prob be my next upgrade - unless the Swift turns out to be the dogs nads and g-sync really is as good as handling lower frame rates as some reports suggest.
