Hi,

Recently Inreceived a recommendation on this Optimus laptop, where you can actually tweak the specs the way you like. I was wondering if it is a reliable brand and if it is worth going for it. They do offer a 3 year warranty. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

could you be slightly more vague? although you probably can't post the link as it is a competitor. but, i think i may know the system you are talking about, and I haven't heard any bad things bar heat and noise which is pretty much standard for any hi spec gaming machine.

Yeah sorry, so basically its this lap top where I can tweak some things on its specs. While doing it, I had a few doubts and would appreciate any help:

-What would be the matte screen?
-If I choose a 2x2gb memory, would I be able to upgrade it to 8gb in the future?
-Is the upgrade to a GT550m a big jump?
-Do you think upgrading the wireless card worth it? Would I be able to use an adapter later on?

Thanks once again for the help.

I will sart with saying for the money, the OcUK gaming MSI laptops are pretty awesome if budget allows. For example 1K gets you this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-045-MS&groupid=959&catid=1828&subcat= which is probably the best gaming laptop you could get. This would blow the system you are looking at out the water and you get a better warranty (2 years iirc) oh and better battery life.

Have you decided what processor you want as with base spec they are Celeron? You don’t actually need any more than an i3 2310-m in real terms as this will happily handle most things you throw at it especially if you spec the GT555 graphics. An i5 2410-m would be nice and only £50 more but as you are hesitant on the memory I assume price is an issue or there is a fair budget. I am also assuming you are speccing the 17” as this is the only one which gives you a choice on graphics being the GT540 or 555. You want to go to the 500GB WD Scorpio drive at least.

1)The matte screen won't be reflective and will have the same finish as most desktop monitors. I prefer matt screens but they only tend to come on business notebooks (like mine). This means you don't get the reflections of the room and imo, they are much better.

2)If you choose 2x2 then you could go for 2x4 later. Memory is very cheap at the moment so you may as well spec 2x4. They are basically charging about £40/50 for the Samsung 2x4GB memory if you want 8GB which isn't bad. Kingston value ram is £16.50 for 4GB of CL9 from most places at the moment though and it looks like the Samsung is CL9 too. Depends how confident you would be in upgrading yourself as you could configure with 1x4 and add the Kingston in saving you £10-25 but memory prices can fluctuate hugely and they seem to be at an all-time low. 4GB is sufficient though for most things but 8GB is nice (I have 6)

3) GT555 not GT550 looking at the specs? Anyway take the 555

4) Standard wireless is still an n so probably fine,

You will want to upgrade the warranty to the 2nd level which is an extra £5 .

But here is the rub, not knowing your budget speccing this up to something worth buying with an i5, 8GB memory and GT555 is £965inc vat, go down to 4GB and i3 and you save £90-100. You could pick up a dell XPS L702 with better specs of the dell outlet (see the dell outlet thread below) for £500-600. In fact the outlet has one on there now with an i7, 8GB mem, 3G GT555 (certified refurbished) for £750 inc 12 month warranty but you will get them cheaper and some real bargains can be had. This will be like new and are usually cancelled orders or DSA returns. The GT550 & i3/i5 ones will set you back around £500.

tldr; specced up the system you are looking at isn't as good value as the dell outlet and will cost about £300+ more than you could get an equivalent system for. If you want to spend near on 1k then get one of the OcUK MSI gaming laptops

I would like to avoid the outlet, since I really want a new laptop. I was looking at either the Asus N73SV-TZ193V and this one where you change the specs. I am looking at a budget of £600-£700, if needs be I can stretch just a bit.

What do you reckon?

Also, I didn't understand your response to the wireless card issue, you mean getting the standard one isn't a problem?

Ah that budget changes things. You won't spec the spec your own to the level it is worth buying in this budget.

Re wireless card the standard cards will be fine as most laptops should be wireless 'n' which is all you need.

100% get the Asus, they are nice laptops, you won't be disapointed, plus they come with 2 year asus warranty iirc, much better build quality as well. Comes in at £671 inc by the looks of it and you get a bluray drive/rw and Full HD screen. The GT540 is good enough.

Just sent it. I would really prefer to but it at a non-online shop. Any suggestions with that restriction are appreciated swell.

Thanks once again, it has been o great help!

dropped you an email, but there is a dell XPS 17 system at the moment which imo can't be beaten. System code N00X7M03 and then VH6BXP5R$TW2V5 at the check out for an extra 10% off some comes in at £630 inc next day on site warranty. i5, Gt550 based system too.
