Hi guys,

Other than WOL what options do I have turning on my laptop without opening the lid and pressing the button?

I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected and a monitor. Is it possible to switch it on with the movement of mouse or pressing a button a keyboard, I suspect if the laptop is off the USB will be off too?

Cheers,

Andy

Depends a bit what is exposed in the BIOS - some can be configured to start up when a key is pressed some will be lacking any such option, etc.

May I ask why you wish to do this?

Dunno about OP but I often use my laptop as an additional desktop system connected into my USB switcher "KVM" and connected to a monitor where it would be handier especially space wise to be able to position it with the lid closed but the power button isn't accessible in that case.

Be careful using a laptop with lid closed.
...need to check screen is off

you mean wake on lan ?

would need to be in standby or win10 connected standby state (which both have only small power consumption) - see powercfg command.
In either of those states can get a wake on usb ( have a usb mouse and needed to disable this annoying behaviour in win7 )

What is wrong with WOL, could that not be triggered by a phone app (like a plex server on demand?)

Thanks for the responses.

I want this as my Laptop sits below my desk on a small set of draws and my monitor, k&m is on the desk. I don't need the laptop open nor is there space for it to be open, fortunately I can open it ever so slightly to actually get to the power button.

It seems Dell 7000's don't have the option bizarrely, the best solution is unplugging and plugging in the power which prompts the laptop to turn on (option in BIOS) - Supposedly it should wake when set to sleep but my mouse and keyboard don't appear to work (bluetooth) - I might need to plug in a small wired keyboard or something to wake it up!
