just want something that will convert avi to vob QUICKLY

if i get a dual core chip. will u use both cores? i'd need dual core software to use them both.

HELP

Depends how much you wanna play with the chip? The AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (oem) looks good value at £193.82 I'm sure that would be faster at encoding than a single 146, but if you have more money and know how to produce a stable overclock then a 165/170 is the way. . .

dont really know how to overclock but could learn i suppose, i just need a chip that is worth the money, upgrading from a 3500

Nero can convert avi to vob and is indeed multithreaded so this would use both cores i.e. get an Opti 165 or the 4200+. Personally, I'd get the 165 and clock it up a bit, but as Big.Wayne says, it's all about your confidence in overclocking.

i was kinda leaning for the 165 as it is getting good clocks... so i was thinking a 165, some faster ram. and HSF and stick it in my current system?

You're MB is going to limit you if you get a 165.

I've got a 165 with a Neo2 Platinum & it's fine: stable @ 2.6 and it's only one core of the CPU that's stopping it from going higher...

The Neo2 chipset can only hit 280-290 max - a limit of all nF3 chipsets unfortunately. Mine topped out at about 280mhz when I had it.

Many 165s will go further than 2.6 and a lot of Neo2s won't go much further than 285MHz on the FSB if I remember correctly.

well it'll do me for now... if i can hit 2.6 i'll be happy :D if i cant, anything over stock will be a bonus :D

Maybe I've been lucky - it was fine at 310 HTT & ran the first 3 tests of S&M OK, but one core fails the FPU test. I'm running @ 290 now & it's passed everything I've tried, including 24h looped S&M (100% load) & 24h of 2 x SP2004
