well guys mounting an opty 146 in my rig currently has the ihs loose on the cpu. Will i see any benefit from removing the IHS in terms of temps/clocking ability?

Actually was browsing net, and found out that Opty's are the best CPU's to remove IHS, as the contact between cooler or something is bad, just google it :)

well opterons tend to run hotter than the equivalent 939 chips that's for sure.

no-one really knows why but they are server class chips so they're probably binned which is why they clock so damn well.

although my recent batch 4000+ runs much hotter than any other 939 chip i've had including opterons so there's always exceptions.

Yeah, also Google where some folks slice off the components underneath !

hey i knocked off 2 caps removing the ihs on my opty 148 ....still clocked to 3.4 just like it did before removal haha :p

when i had a 146, with ihs it would do 2.9ghz, but when i removed it i could only get it to 2.8ghz. Had no idea why, temps were the same, if not a degree lower without the ihs

Did you damage any of the tiny resistors?

mounting is extremely important once the IHS is removed, there's no way possible your o/c will be lower all things being equal.

so my money would be on a mounting issue.

I've read on a different forum that AMD started soldering the IHS to the chip so if you try to remove it then you will most probably damage the chip. I've seen a picture of this happen to some dude.

I think thats with skt AM2 cpu's, skt 939 are still made the 'good 'ol way' ;)
