I'm having cooling probs with my Opty 165.

Details :-

Opty 165 @ 300*9 (1.375v)
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro with AS5
120mm rear exhaust fan
2 * Antec SmartCool 92mm front fans - dunno if these are making the noise?

Temps :

Core 0 : 48C (idle)
Core 1 : 45C (idle)
M/B temp : 52C!

Antec Titan case with TruPower 550W PSU - fan speed 952rpm (this seems low?!)

Any suggestions? I also want to try to make the case a bit quieter if poss, but with those temps it's a bit worrying!

Want to get by with this setup until summer when hopefully the new AMD chips will be out and also R600. I can dream!

How hot is your room ? Are all the fans working ? 52c for motherboard temp sounds like bad airflow in the case, or extremely high ambient / room temperature ( is it very cold atm where you live ? )

If you've just installed the cpu, try reseating the heatsink / using the ' grain of rice ' method of applying the thermal paste ( I'm guessing you're using Arctic Silver 5 ? )

On some setups, it seems that the Freezer64 Pro doesn't seem to cope so well with dual core chips. Don't take that as gospel though until you can rule out a case airflow / heatsink not seated properly issue.
 
Yes, I'm using CoreTemp.

The room isn't overly hot. One thing I have noticed though, is that the PC is only 2 months old, but the amount of dust inside is incredible!

I applied AS5 using the instructions on the Arctic Silver website - grain of rice in the middle of the IHS and a slight twist of the Freezer Pro.

Would I notice much difference with a Tuniq?

The PC is running fine, and is ultra stable, if a little noisy!
 
Oh, and yes, all the fans are working.

The case has the ability to have another fan mounted on the side panel - 80mm - but that will just add to the noise!
 
Does the Pc sit on the floor, by any chance ? I did have mine there, but like you the dust would build up quickly inside if not cleaned out reguarly. Managed to move it onto my desk and it's much better.

The Tuniq should be a big improvement over the Freeezer64 Pro, as my Scythe Mine dropped temps by 4-5c compared to the Freezer, and the Tuniq is better than that.

I'd try and rearrange your cables inside the Pc if possible to see if you can improve the airflow, as although the Tuniq is regarded as one of the best aircoolers around, it'll need a good supply of ambient air to do its job properly ( as would any heatsink )

If possible, post some pics of the ipc with the sidepanel off, and hopefully a few others will chip in on if / how to improve the airflow.
 
I have an opty 165 @ 312x9 that idles at about 36C and 38C per core. Load is 50C and 52C. It is cooled with a Scythe ninja and Arctic Silver Ceramique.

If i were you i'd upgrade the cooler like you've been advised! The freezer 64 is ok (i've used one on an A65 3700+ @ 2.6ghz) but the scythe is in a different class! Any of the big boys will do - big typhoon, thermalright (si128, hr-01, ultra 120), noctua, scythe (ninja, infinity) and finally the tuniq tower.

The tuniq always gets rave reviews so that might have to be your first port of call! :)

On the dust issue i can only say that getting or making a dust filter for the intakes on the case would heklp you a lot! I would hate to have to systematically hoover the inside of my pc (heatsinks like the tuniq must be a nightmare!) so stopping the dust before it gets in makes sense!

Also, i try to make sure that more air is coming into the case than leaving (positive pressure) that way air bleeds OUT of every nook and cranny in the case rather than IN. When air bleeds IN then you have no control on the dust as it bypasses the filters on the fans and makes it to your components anyway! :rolleyes: This is another aspect of my old antec P180 that i disliked. It had 1 120mm fan drawing air into the case and 2 rear 120mm fans extracting. The volume of dust sucked through the drive bays and into the case was phenominal!!! The joke was that the front 120mm fan had a dust filter on it! I hardly ever had to clean it!!! :p

Also, I ordered a Tuniq today, along with a EVGA 8800GTX, so they will get installed tomorrow.

One other thing... the two front 92mm fans (can't be seen on pics) have no filters.......

Great stuff! The Tuniq will deffo help your temps!

As for the filters - i've heard that tights work very well! You should be able to remove the two 92mm fans, stretch the tights over the front, set them back in place and hey presto! Their natural elasticity will mean they won't get sucked into the fan too (as long as they're sufficiently taut!)!

Stupid question...

I've fitted the Tuniq, but how do I know if I've fitted it the right way round?

Knowing my luck I've put it in back to front like I did originally with my Freezer Pro!

Also, I only seem to be getting a couple of deg C lower than with my Freezer Pro 64 - was expecting more like 5C difference?

If you used Arctic Silver5, give it a few days to ' settle in ', which should see the temps drop another few degrees.
 
I did use AS5 - a grain and a half of rice as per the website instructions.

I need to check the Tuniq is facing the right way though, didn't seem any obvious markings to say which way it needs to face!
 
The Freezer Pro 64 is actually a very good cooler and should have been more than enough to cool your Opteron. When you removed the Freezer, did you take note of how much of the CPU heatsheild was covered in AS5? If the majority was covered (corners do not matter) then you would have had good contact and enough AS5 applied. If just the centre was covered you probably needed a dab more compound.

So long as load temps stay below 60deg I would not worry too much. Opterons are tough beasts and do not to go pop without extreme abuse.
