Need some advice please.
First of all, i'm not upgrading to Conroe as it would require too many parts to change.
I want to upgrade my AMD 64 3700 to dual core.
I've got the choice of Opy 175 (2.2Ghz)@ £152 or the Opty 180 (2.4Ghz) @£192, both retail versions. (note: there is no way i can find out their steppings before i buy)

My system system will be:

Choice of the above CPUs
MY-005-GL GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS2.5
DFI LanParty UT RDX200CF-DR Crossfire (Socket 939) Motherboard
GX-053-PC PowerColor ATI Radeon X800 GTO 128MB DDR TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler
4 Sata HDs
1 IDE HD
550W Generic PSU (i am aware that i might have to upgrade this but would rather not for the time being-it is happily coping with my 3700@2576 at stock volts)
DVDRW
Case with 2X120mm front intake and rear exhaust, 1X80mm top fan

I will be overclocking this CPU.

Which processor should i go for and why?

Thanks
:)

I would look for a second hand 165 or 170 with a nice stepping.

My 170 did 2.8ghz on 1.375v

2.7ghz on stock volts. :)

I just sold a 165 that did 3ghz.

Wait for MM to reopen there are loads in there :) going for around 100

Thanks for your input easyrider.
I'd prefer to buy brand new retail or oem than used so the questions still stand, 175 or 180 and why?

Thanks
m

The only difference is the multi.

You could get a 175 that clocks better than the 180 or vice versa.

I would just get the cheapest

becuase you cant be sure of stepping i suppose i 180 would be better becuase atleast that ya your going to get a high clock speed at stock - however the difference in over all performance between any opteron would probably rather negligble - so i would go for the cheapest as others have said - but keep an open mind a ccbbe stepping 165 will do like 2.8ghz - anyway whatever you choose im sure you wont be disapointed :)

Thanks.
Do you know if i will need registered memory for the opty 175/180 or will the memory i have be OK?

m

The 939 Opterons are the same as the Athlon 64/X2s, only socket 940 Opterons require registered memory.

In other words, no, you don't :p

Get a 165 or 170 with that tasty DFI board. Any others are a waste of money, and you're more likely to get an old, slow stepping.
Normal memory.
Yes, will love it. DFI are the best for 939.

why would sell a cpu that does 3ghz for 2.8ghz? they both dual core and pay more for less?

Can't find the 170 new from the UK.
I have, though, found the 165 new at £115.
So the choice is now between the 165, 175 and 180 none of which i can find steppings for before i buy. So is it worth risking the 165 with a possibly slow stepping and therefore poor resultant clock speed, or just go for the 180 which has a guaranteed decent stock speed in case it doesn't O/C well?

i want a opty 175 so i can use the same settings as i got for my [email protected] . I am sure a opty 175 would do 2.8Ghz or more right?

better then FX 62?

happy new year btw :D

p.s i think i'm going to treat my self to opty 175 this year LOL

should get good money for my 3700SD which does 2.8 (same as FX 57) love saying that lol

Put it this way, a 165 will always do 2.6GHz, that's already more than the "guaranteed" speed of 2.4 from the 180, but the 165 is far more likely to reach 2.9 or 3.

Or, there are (probably) more of the older, rubbish stepping 180s because they don't sell nearly as well.

ok but what are the chances of 175 hitting 2.8ghz? i aint seen many ppl with this cpu. i wanna put cpu 255ht and ram 333 so 255x11=2.8 and ram goes to 200fsb

No, don't get the 175, it won't overclock as well! Get a 165, or 170! The new 165's do 2.8-2.9 on stock volts!

damn, i can get a 175 for the price of 165 about 120 inc del
