Opty or AMD 64x2?

As I've now been started on a quest to upgrade my CPU in my bi-annual 'PC overhaul & upgrade', whats the best guys, an Opty or an AMD64x2?

I currently have a winchester 3500 which I overclock by about 5% when playing FPS etc but leave as stock for browsing etc.

I do think I want to go down the dual core route by way of future proofing as far as I can, but not too sure what the benefits of either CPU are. My understanding is that Opterons overclock better, but if I only want to squeeze a bit more out of it, is this still the case? Possible options are an Opty 2.2GHz or the 64x2 4400 or 4600.

Any advice welcome.

I would personally go with the opteron as they do overclock very well, but some of the X2's also clock well and they are reasonably priced atm.

I'd go for the X2 3800+ or 4400+. I wouldn't bother with an opty as they are more expensive. You can still get decent overclocks from the X2 cpus.

edit: A X2 4400+ is the same speed (at stock) as a opty 175 and the opty costs £60 more. I just don't think it's worth the extra money if you will only overclock a little.

Yep, the X2's are better value these days & if you can hang on abit the price will fall a lot more, if recent reports are to be believed.

That's a bit odd. I have a feeling the X2 4000+ AM2 may never actually come in stock now. I've been waiting more than two weeks for mine now, but yesterday I just decided to switch for the 3800+.
