Oracle VirtualBox black screen

I am trying to run an Ubuntu image in VirtualBox and having serious problems. On both work laptops the VM appears to run the image fine but I am just greeted with a black screen (once it did look like it loaded but nothing happened). My work PC won't even install VirtualBox as it says there isn't enough HD space (177MB required, 300GB available).

The guy who made the image says it ran fine on both Windows machines he has at his home.

Both laptops are running Windows 7 x64. I have tried allocating 512Mb and 1GB to the VM for RAM. Running the latest VirtualBox with the extension pack. Any ideas?

Enabling 2D got me as far as a boot menu. Though still a black screen after.

Do any other distros work? Do you have the distro image you are having bother with anywhere online for me to have a go? Is it an ISO of the install disk or a VHD you're trying to load?

Word of warning - this is all very new to me so bare with :).

I haven't tried any other distros - I can download one now and see. Can't give you this distro image as it contains a piece of software (risk algorithm) that my boss would probably not want me sharing :p.

The image itself is a .vdi file and contains a script that automatically loads the risk algorithm I need access to. I believe it was easier to deploy on a Linux image/OS. Hope this helps.
