I have a Sony Ericsson W910i which is, when it gets down to it, a very nice phone indeed. I don't think i prefer it to my old Samsung D500, but what can you do.

I've had my W910i for 7 months now, to the day, and in the last 4 weeks i've begun to notice some problems with it. It seemed that when my phone was in the bottom of my bag, it would lose connection to the network showing me (the now intensely plaguing) message "No Access to Network". The only way to fix this, it turned out, was to turn the phone off, then on again. Now, not such an issue i agree, but the phone is ludicrously slow at powering up (one of it's few flaws). This makes reconnecting to said network a 3 minute job. Not particularly useful in an emergency, not that i've had one. He says touching wood.

Over the last 4 weeks however, i've noticed the problem getting worse. No Access to Network whilst in my drawer at work, for example. No Access to Network in my Inside Pocket. No Access to Network in my regular pocket. No Access to Network on the desk. No Access to Network outside of direct sunlight. No Access to Network if you look at it funny. I figured it was about time i looked into fixing it. So i called Orange.

"No worries!", proclaimed the guy. "This happens a lot. Just head into your settings and set the network reception to GSM Only! It appears there is a 3g mast down in your area!"
"Excellent" said I "And just in case that doesn't work?"
"Sir," said he, "I'd stake stake my house on it"

I wonder if they have call recording and if that statement would hold up in a court of law. I could use a house.

So, it's the following week, and the issues remain. This very morn i decided it was time for another call.

"Hello. You should have a call logged from me from last week describing my inability to use my phone on your network. I'd like to try another fix please as the last didn't work"
"I have no such notes on your account* Sir, but not to worry, i think i know how we can fix it-"
"Careful!" i interrupted "The last guy who said that owes me a house".

*this is DampCat's complete lack of surprise -

He didn't wait for an explanation. Indeed, he powered on, exclaiming that my course of action should be to trundle off down to Carphone Warehouse and buy a Signal Booster. Of course! I need to Boost my Signal! Obviously what has happened is that my Signallation has suffered, for some reason best known to the Gods alone, and it requires more Boostability. So off i trot at lunchtime, with a large portion of Naive and a side of Stupid, rocking up to the stubbly-but-friendly looking guy in the Warehouse for Car related Telecommunications.

"A what?"
"Indeed, but apparently that's what i need,"
"Need? What even is it? It goes between the battery? What?"
"Soooo... no Signal Boosting here then?"
"Indeed not, friend. You've been diddled. Unless, of course, such an item has passed my notice in my 9 years service in this store, and many like it around the country"

So, back at the office, i'm back on the phone to Orange.

"Hello. I do believe you were mistaken. My Signal remains unBoosted, my Network remains unAccessed, and my Patience(tm) is running Thin. I would like you to take my phone and fix it please. It is currently, very Un-Mobile."

"Well, sir, your Warranty is expired"
"It's a 7 month old phone on an 18 month contract."
"With a 6 month Warranty, sir"
"Uh huh. So wait. What you're saying then, if you may be so kind as to correct me where i'm mistaken, is that, perhaps somewhat convieniently, 1 day after my curiously short warranty expired my Access to the Network became very flakey indeed. As a fix, you've requested that i further restrict my Access to said Network by removing 3G and that the only options available to me are to buy a non-existent piece of hardware, or send it back to you at quite the price to have it fixed, with a 28 day turnaround?"
"Have you worked for Orange before sir?"
"Screw you, guy"
*click*

Anger.

"i'll check Sony Ericsson's site for a support number and see what they say about getting my phone repaired. I'd rather give them money than those seenuts at Orange", i told my particularly uninterested co-worker.

"Yes mate" Mr Sony-Ericsson replied, "try a firmware update as it's a regular problem with that series, and if not, give me a call back tomorrow on my direct line and we'll arrange a replacement phone. should be a 7 to 10 day turnaround."

Wait... what?

All electronic goods sold in the EU must come with a minimum of a 12 month warranty. Either you've been told porkies or Orange are breaking the law.

And yes, it's usually better going direct to the manufacturers. Nokia are very good apart repairs too.

I'd wager that nobody at Orange has a clue about anything outside of My Little Pony. I cant ven be bothered to phone back and question the warranty. I'm just going to stick with Sony Ericssons 24 month manufacturer one.

Astounding.

Orange have a long-held reputation of having the worst customer service of any mobile phone operator in Britain. Why are they still in business?

5 stars for that post, DampCat - you should go into standup :D

Interesting read :)
I've had one amazing piece of customer service from Orange - he was called Jules (sp?) and I don't think I've ever spoken to such a friendly and helpful chap. He was from one of the few, if only, UK call centres so all was good.
The guys in India/wherever are terrible though, never seem to get something done on the first attempt.

Brill read DC.

My customer service was a bit better. My phones been on the blink for a few months, but put up with. Camera button doesnt take photos, the 5 button works occasionally, handy when you need to text with "j,k or l" the "joy"stick doesnt always go down and in the last week the web button has gone along with the * button (needed for keylock)

Phoned my sp as Im due an upgrade in december, and told them my woes and if I could possibly get an early upgrade (good customer n all) but they said no after 3 minutes drinking tea and conferring. But they said your phones still in its 3year warranty (Sony k810i) so pop it in a bag with the battery and send it to this address we will email you and we'll send a replacement.

Hmm, 3-4 days without a phone, who can i borrow one off...

Anyways, courier turned up at my door yesterday (no-one in) and got a card. Phoned them up, they were shut. Phoned them this morning, "Ah sir, its a mobile phone" "yes" says I "can I have it delivered to my work" "No sir, we need you to contact o2 to instruct us to release it to your work address" "oh, says I, but they usually deliver it to my work anyway, and your man is here all the time and knows me" "where do you work sir" so I told her and she's like "oh, I will ask Rab if he can bring it round".

So phones here, they've broke their "must not let phone out without instructions law" and Im happy :D

although its weird using a working phone now. hey ho, upgrade soon anyway .. *rubs hands together*

I posted on here just the other day as i was also hitting a brick wall with orange on a faulty phone only 3 months old. The customer service guy told me the phones are not "sold" But are gifts when taking out a contract and are therefore not covered under the sale of goods act

Just as an update, in case anyone cares; I tried a firmware update that Sony Ericsson recommended which doesnt seem to have solved it, so they guy has sent me an email with a freepost address (i'll probably send recorded though) to get my phone either repaired or replaced free of charge.

Top job.

Erm... thats not true at all.
Anything bought in the Uk has to be free from defects for a total of 6 years, not 12 months. However if something goes wrong, then the retailer has to take into account the usage "enjoyed" before settling on the amount to spend towards the repair. I could go on and on about this, but its better if you visit the trading standards website for a full break down.

FYI SE devices come with a 24 month warranty anyway.

it's not for 6 years, it's a reasonable time, but up to six years, a subtle but important difference.

Not to mention that the onus to prove the fault was inherant (ie present at point of sale) changes at the 6 month point, from retailer (to prove the fault wasn't inherant) to customer (to prove the fault was). That's where the 6 month replacement policy at Orange for customers without care who bought the phone directly comes from.

With regards to customer service, won't get into it too much, but as announced in the press, there is movement to pull all customer service work back to the UK

http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/June2008/6188.htm

and to improve service standards, although this obviously takes time.

wow sounds like you've had a crap time with orange then! Last week i called them about my n95 having developed a slight crackle in the ear piece- no problem declared the customer service dude ' i'll send you another one, when do you want it? (this was at 5pm) tomorrow morning i said, ok thats fine it'll be with you tomorrow morning. wow i said, my contract is up in less than a month, are you sure you should be sending me a new phone? yeah dont worry about it he said!

now thats what i call customer service!! did someone say xperia...

Are they allowed to do that?!?! I thought they had to take the old one in for examination!
Bet that guy is gonna be in trouble with his manager!

well it is the n95 (my fifth one). and it was faulty anyway so i'm not doing anything untoward, nor was he doing anything wrong by accepting it.

Funny that, one of the lads at work has an N95 on Orange and it's been a total dog. I had one on Voda and have not had a single issue with it, regardless of abuse levels from me. ]]Voda have been spot on for me, I've rarely needed their help and whenver I have, they've sorted any issue pretty much straight away. I have been with vodaphone for nearly 3 years through an N3, N95 and an E71 and the most I've ever had to do was update the software in that time.

yeah some people just have bad luck! i'm not bothered though, there is a program on the phone where you can switch all data from the old one to the new one without having to mess about, plus i like having shiney new ones all the time!
