Orange data allowances and going over.

So my home internet is down, and there's some thing(s) I want to download tomorrow.

I'm on one of the Orange Panther plans with 750MB limit/FUP(I'm unsure on this, detail below) that was made in June/July last year.

Now up until now I'd assumed that the 750MB was a limit and that I'd be charged for going over, after a quick search though (and it was quick, since I only have my phones internet atm and haven't got round to tethering it yet) some people seem to suggest that on the Panther plan it's actually an FUP rather than a limit, and that I should be ok going over as long as it isn't all the time/by a stupid amount. So I'm a bit confused on whether I'll be ok downloading some stuff tomorrow that will take me over my cap/FUP (I can make it by only a small amount if needed).

So anyone (Myshra, I'm looking at you :p) know what will happen if I go over 750MB tomorrow (charged/data stopped/nothing)?

Edit: Obviously if no-one knows I'll just ring Orange, but I hate speaking to CS and really cba at the minute after speaking to Sky for half an hour being told that the line to the property should be fine and I'd be charged £100 if I had an engineer come round and find that it is an internal problem, to then be told that they couldn't book an engineer because there's a problem they know about at the exchange .

It's like when I was trying to download a 'free' game from Green Man Gaming, and I went over my allowance. Worked out it would have been cheaper just to buy the game and have it sent to me.

The last time I checked it was £1 per mbyte over the limit. I assume it's lower than that now, but I wouldn't rely on it being a sensible price. Check your contract / orange website / call orange.

Bit late i know but....

no chance of "borrowing" some-one elses wifi?
WEP < not worth the effort of enabling it on a router :D

It will depend on the exact package string you have, which I definitely can not see for you specifically sorry. Calling them would sort it indeed or mailing them.

Edit: Contracts after Nov 2010 go here: http://www.orange.co.uk/usage/

I asked exactly this about three days ago, the answer is you get charged £1 for everyday you use data after you go over the limit. So if you get to 750mb by half way through the month and then use data services on the phone 7 of the 15 days remaining in the month they will charge you an extra £7. However, the woman I spoke to said you would essentially have to turn the phone off not to use some small amount of data each day (with all the background stuff going on your phone). She did say though that the data on the £1 days was unlimited, ie you pay £1 if you use 1mb or 1000mb on that day.

This will be specific to your package (sounds like an old one to me but if it's new it's kinda bad so I'm sorry :( ), it's not a blanket policy anymore. The FUP policy is mostly in effect now as far as I understand.

It is very very possible to shut down data as I do it a lot, on Android you simply disable data connections and on iPhones the same option exists in settings (wireless > mobile network settings > disable "use packet data" in Android. Left my iPhone at home but it's in the same menu)

Grudas, when you joined Orange or renewed the contract with BTOZ thrown in you got a text from.... 249 (I think) saying your user/pass. Pass isn't formulated, its a random char string so if you don't still have the text I'd suggest calling up CS who can send you the text again :)

i had the text sent twice.. never written it down as there was nowhere to enter it as the page simply doesn't load - even with orange wifi app

I don't get the apps as my phone's usually have the market culled but for the few times I have used it I connected to an openzone AP and went to the default "Hi I'm Openzone" webpage (just go to any URL and it redirects) selected Orange on some menu, page reloaded and IIRC, I used my number and the pw provided over SMS to make it work.

orange wifi app now says the spot is "broken" lol.. i guess it would connect if the spot was working.. ill get the password again of the website and try tmrw at work :)

Just came across this ( http://www1.orange.co.uk/service_plans/downloads/PAYM-PG-20111129.pdf ) whilst searching for something else and thought about this thread. Essentially I was right in what I said above (check page 31 of the pdf), it would seem on all tariffs on Orange now its a flat rate of £1 for each day data is used after you go over your allowance.

Indeed you're right, thats the 29th November Update doc so it unfortunately it looks like the cost is pretty steep :(

Cheers for all the answers guys, decided to just go round a mates in the end :).

The £1 a day thing, while steep, does seem like it could be useful occasionally, it would have course mean I'd only ever want to do it at either the end of the month, or at a time when I don't mind disabling data completely until the end of the month :p.
