Wife phoned orange to try for a contract as the online one with them canceled itself. Her credit check went through okay but then they asked for £5 "deposit" off a credit/debit card in the wifes name. Now I can understand this is to reduce fraud as in proving you are who you say you are.

BUT the lass couldnt tell me when or even if we would get that money back. So do you ever get it back?

Also is this normal and Phones4U and o2 online didnt need the above?

The £5 will be taken off your bill. Its normally just taken to confirm who you are through your bank. Most place you order from either over the phone or on the web will do this. e2save and OSPH (wich you should look at before you buy any phone) take 1p lol!

I actually had Orange request a £70 deposit for a £5 sim. Told them to shove it where the sun don't shine  :D

 what the hell were they thinking?

The guy claimed it was standard policy, and when I registered my phone with them, they would refund the money. I tried to explain (was in a meeting with a client at the time - they were laughing by the end) that I would not be phoning them up as it was only a sim, and I would be unable to give them the imei number of the new phone

What a £5 payg sim?

Yup - a whopping £5 sim

Yeah neither have i, which is worrying me as i dont want £100 to suddenly disappear from my account as theres not anywhere near £100 in there! Still ive had the phone for 2 weeks and nothing has gone yet.
