I'm struggling to find the answer to this and just need a clued up individual to give me a heads up. I've got a 3g 16gb Iphone that was replaced by Apple and is O2 locked that I'm running an O2 simplicity plan on.

My wife is getting a brand new 3GS from a friend who is on Orange but doesn't want the upgrade. The wife is on O2 like me.

Basically I just want to know if an Orange Iphone is going to be locked and whether it will work with her O2 sim.

Oh pap,

Thanks for the info, I take it there is no official Orange/Apple unlocking service like O2 offer? Looks like we might have to sell it on then or move her over to an Orange plan.

Have you tried calling orange to see if they can unlock the iphone? Aslong as its not tied into a contract then they are obliged to unlock the iphone

Surely just unlock it yourself?

Yes but that wouldn't be an official method. I prefer it to be Apple unlocked.

@Soul Survivor - Really? Well that's interesting. We are getting the iphone in the next few days and I'll report on my findings. If it's no dice with the O2 sim I'll give Orange a ring.

Not possible on the 3.1.3 firmware :o

Honestly, I was quite surprised myself and it's on 3.1.3 aswell :)

Id imagine as both o2 and orange are official suppliers, itunes cant tell the difference when authorising the iphone at setup.

That could be true as when I bought my own 3g off a popular auction site, activation using itunes with an o2 simplicity sim wouldn't go through that day. Even though it was bought from a guy on an o2 contract.

Popped into an o2 shop a few hours later and the customer services chap said I wasn't the first with activation problems that day as it was close to the time Orange were going live with the iPhone.

The following day it all worked as it should. Maybe itunes does struggle with recognising Orange or o2.

It will be interesting to insert the o2 sim first on this brand new 3gs.

I'm wanting to know if Orange are going to do the same unlocking scheme as O2 do. As it would mean a 3GS sale for them. If not, I will stick with 02.
