Orange - Iphone 4 - how does it work?

I've recently upgraded to IP4, and now my calls don't divert to VM, I'm also without visual voicemail which I was led to believe is an excellent feature of this phone.

I've been through all the settings in the phone and also in the Voicemail options and there appears to be no option to turn it on/off

Could someone guide me as to where I'm going wrong?

Phone up CS you need the visual voicemail tag put on your account iirc. At a guess you got the phone sim free / from somewhere else? It should have been put on your plan automatically if you got it from Orange. I'm not sure I'd call it excellent but it's not bad :)

Visual Voicemail is not yet available on the Orange network, however, this may be something we support in the future.

Your incoming calls should divert to our Orange answerphone if your phone is busy, turned off, or not answered. If your phone is not doing this, I'd advise to call Customer Services and speak to our iPhone Team, who will be able to advise further.
