Hi guys,

What is Orange's policy on unlocking contract handsets?

Vodafone unlocked my N95 8Gb for free. Will Orange do this? The phone in question is an N73 which has been out of contract for well over a year. The contract it was originally purchased on is still running, with a newer handset.

I'd like to to use the N73 as a second phone running on Telstras Next G network, which is UMTS 850 3g. I take it the N73 supports this?

Ta!

Cheeky, guess its the best deal I'm going to get though. Is it just a case of ringing CS? How long does it take?

Vodafone were the epitome of efficiency - 24 hours later my phone was unlocked for no charge. Why do I get the impression its going to be a whole lot more hassle with Orange..

Does anyone know if the N73 will work on Telstras 850Mhz UMTS NextG network? It says it supports 850Mhz but is this 2G or 3G?

Yes 150 from your Orange phone and the unlock code should come within 48 hours by email.

I don't think the N73 will work on 3G - as the UMTS on that handset will only operate on 2100 Mhz

Frequency Bands
GSM 1800
GSM 1900
GSM 850
GSM 900
WCDMA 2100

Operating Frequency for Nokia N95 8GB

* WCDMA 2100 + E850/900/1800/1900MHz

It looks like it won't work on 3G at 850MHz.

I don't think you'll find many handsets that operate on 850 MHz 3G, as Telstra are the only network in the world to use that band (although I think AT&T might be using it in the US at some locations).

As much as I hate to say it, it looks like the iPhone is really the only major handset to do 850MHz 3G.

Well that sucks. My girlfriend has some random Samsung brick that works on 3G 850Mhz but obviously its locked to Telstra and I wanted to simply roam onto the Next G network using my Vodafone Passport account.

I always thought that once you had finished your contract they would normally unlock for free

You will need an American version of the N95 to use the Australian 850mhz band. So that'd be the N95-3 and -4.
