Hi, im a fairly light user on the old direct 100 plan but, would like a new phone.

By contract expired afaik back in january (but, i havent heard of anything from orange).
i was originally on orange PAYG and went to cntract. When i ddi i was esssentially a new customer so got a good deal on my phone.

However, i know im a light user so i dont expect to get a good upgrade deal.

Would i be able to phone orange and ask to be downgraded from monthly to PAYG (keeping my number) basically cancelling contract. Then a month later buy a new phone again and because im not a monthly customer get a good deal again?

Is that possible? As i really dont fancy spending £200 just on a phone :(

Any advice would be appreciated

p.s. im interested in the new nokias like n95 but nto sure exactly which yet.

If your contract ended at january, and haven't extended it, your no longer on contract.
You can buy another contract phone no problem without upgrade.

He's still on contract, just a rolling contract from month to month instead of a full 12/18 months. You'll need to call Orange to cancel this current contract before taking out another, otherwise you'd find yourself paying 2.

Funnily enough Orange, like all networks don't want you doing this.
Cheap phones are offered to new customers as an incentive to bring them to their network because they are "unknown" - they may make the network money, they may not.
You are a known entity and you are a light user entity so you are not going to get good deals on new phones.
Threatening to leave will also not give you great results, if you're bordering on PAYG as an option then they would probably rather see you leave as giving you a new phone at a low cost will result in them actually losing money.

If you don't mind getting a new number then you can obviously cancel your current contract and get a new phone on a new contract.
Alternatively you can get your PAC code from Orange and take out a brand new contract with say O2 or Vodafone and port your number over to them.

To keep your existing number on Orange (and get a good deal on a new handset) will require a more long term thing.
First you'll want to transfer your Orange number to say O2 PAYG (or Vodafone, your call).
Then you can wait 30 days, get a brand new Orange contract and then port the number back from O2 PAYG to Orange - and be treated as a new customer and get the "new customer" deals.

All in all a lot of messing about swapping networks (and then back again) but the only real way of getting it done.
