Howdy all,

Just ordered my first laptop as I'll now be travelling a lot with work, I was reluctant at first as I've always had a thing against laptops but I've had to give in... all good though when I found the custom upgrades available my interest perked up.

I wanted something for coding, gaming and media so high spec was necessary. Decent keyboard and screen were a must with good audio and a powerful set-up.

Ended up going for a custom spec MSI GT70 Dominator 17.3", final spec:

i7-4800MQ Processor, 2.7 GHz (Turbo 3.7GHz) 6MB Smart Cache
8GB Nvidia GTX 880M
17.3" 1920 x 1080 Full HD (16:9) LED Backlit Antiglare Type 72% NTSC Color Gamut Display
32GB Dual Channel DDR3L at 1600MHz (4 x 8GB)
RAID 0 (striping) - MSI Super RAID
768GB RAID (3 x Samsung PM851 256GB mSATA SSD)
1TB Solid State Hybrid Drive
Dual Layer Blu-ray Burner (BR-R, DVD+-RW, CD-RW)
Steel Series Gaming Backlit/Color Changing/Programmable 102 keys
Dynaudio Tech Speakers x 2 + Subwoofer x 1
1 9 cell battery - 7800mAh, 87Wh
Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 a/g/n 2x2 MIMO
Bluetooth 4.0

The MSI seems bulky I know, it's not the worst out there for that but the materials are top notch and it isn't too heavy 3.9kg stock. The RAID 0 promises 1500MB/s, the intel turbo boosts the CPU from 2.7 to 3.7 when needed (gaming etc.) but keeps temps and fans low during normal use. 8GB vram is a bit ridiculous, but I guess it may allow the laptop to last a bit longer.

Actually can't wait for it to arrive, should be fun :) I'll get pics up soon as it's here (by the weekend hopefully).

1920x1080, 8GB VRAM.

Stupid. :p

Nice spec, but I can't fathom the amount of VRAM. Utterly stupid. :p

Unless you plan on connecting a few 4K displays? ;) :D

Yeah boot time should be ridiculous :)

Not sure I can name th company on this forum I'm afraid.

Yeah 8gb is silly, but the 880M has a slightly faster spec too as well as the extra 4gb - wasn't planning on getting it but they offered so I took it :D

Hello. Did you get the laptop?
Hows is the cooling on them/build quality/noise? The 870 and 880 are strong contenders for me now. Waiting for better availability ...

Hey, yeh I did, sorry I meant to update with pics at some point.

I've not had a chance to run any games on it just yet, but normal use it runs perfect. I've just transferred some games onto my external, I'll give them a go this week and get back.

During normal use it's quiet and cold, very nice to use.

I've installed Tomb Raider (not played this new one before) and the game is running flawlessly on Ultimate settings, fans kick in and they are louder than I expected but nothing too intrusive to the experience. There is something like a "fan boost" button at the top of the keyboard which does seem to kick them into overdrive if required, this is definitely louder than I would have liked however I've not managed to have this speed come on automatically during high load, only when pressing that button - So, so far so good.

Installing Metro today, see how that fairs.

I'll capture some video and upload that at some point if anyone wishes.

Would be great.
The button is there for the purpose of extra speed when playing for a long time....I don't think that its even possible for the fan to go on its own that fast :)
I am waiting to see the GS stealth/Ghost Pro with 870m and what temps they have....so it will be either GT70 with 870 or ghost (or Apache pro with 860m? lol) I don't know if I need 870, probably not, but now I can afford so I think it would be more future proof then 860 just in case :)

Yeah pretty much the same thought process of myself, don't necessarily need it but nice to know the Laptop will last a couple of gens.

Having issues with Metro install, think my iso is corrupt so will get on that next week after I've been back home. Trying N4S Rivals as we speak...

Here you are mate:

Me getting lost at the beginning of Tomb Raider [1920x1080 - Gfx:Ultimate - 281mb]

N4S Rivals-Was meant to be a short street chase, oops [1920x1080 - Gfx:Ultra - 624mb]

Two videos so far, large file sizes to keep everything unaltered. Sorry N4S is so large, it was the only screengrab that saved in the end.

It's weird, I grew up playing both these games yet it appears I'm appalling at these latest versions, N4S is actually slightly boring :( (give me a simulator any day). Tomb Raider seems like it will get fun at least... Shame Metro didn't work.

I have 2 other games with me I can try out, however I don't think they are graphically taxing: The Stanley Parable & The Stick of Truth. Any other game you wish me to test?

I would really like to buy the GT70 PE from overclockers but I cant justify the £200 extra to do it. Why do they charge more, anyone know? Its exactly laptop on "the other site" so why the extra?
