Hi chaps, I've just ordered Virgin 50 Meg and was wondering about the physical installation.

From reading their website blurb they're going to take a line from their cabinet, through the front garden and through the outer wall to some kind of master socket inside.

Firstly, how do they go about going through the garden? It's a brick driveway with a small amount of earth around the rim for plants.

Secondly currently I've set up our ADSL router in the kitchen, which is in the dead centre of the house and from there cables go all over the house via a patch panel (channelled Ethernet cables all over when an extension was being done). To do this, the BT cable is routed from the master socket by the front door, under the floorboards, through the wall separating the hallway and the kitchen and up to where the router is. Will the Virgin installer just whack the box wherever is closest to the cable outside or do you reckon I could get him to route a cable into the kitchen, which will save me a few hours DIY?

I would phone Virgin, but I'm bored of being on hold.

Normally I think he would route a cable to the kitchen but only by running the cable along skirting boards, doorways etc. If you took up the floorboards for him in advance, perhaps he may route it that way - have you tried posting on the Virgin support form ? Much easier than a phone call

I would honestly ask for the new 'Superhub', that way if you ever want to upgrade to the 100Mb service you don't have to pay for a new modem and installation. It would just give you a little bit more future proofing.

Btw there will have to be contractors come to lay the wire from the street to your house as well as the engineer for your house part.

Just pick where you want the phone and where you want the internet in your house and they will install it.

There are two cables..I have one(internet) installed in the middle of my place and my phone in the front room.
They layed the cable and installed it in about 1 1/2 hours.

You should ask for a piv pre install visit. That way you they will send a tech around and agree a route.
