as per title. i was going to order an i7 8700 and a new mobo but i dont no if i really need to spend the extra. or do i just go with a 7700k.

i am upgrading from an i5 7400 i use my pc for gaming and some streaming to twitch. my current mobo is only a h110 plus which would take a 7700k but i could upgrade and the same time.

i have a budget of about 450 ish

any advice would be good thanks in advance

Hmm if streaming and gaming, then go for the 8700K imo, or look at Ryzen 1700, you can get a new mobo + cpu for £450 easily, but 8700k is going to be your best bang for buck if solely gaming with some streaming.. you should be able to flog your old rig to help offset the cost of the 8700k.

With 8700 over 8700k you would save £100+ as you wouldn't need a higher-end motherboard or an expensive cooler. The 8700 is a terrible price at the moment though, Ryzen 1700 is a better price although it isn't quite so good for gaming.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £851.06 (includes shipping: £11.10)

im only gaming at 1080p with a 1070. i would wait but my i5 is struggling to do what i want at the minute.

is the 8700 that much better than the 7700k to warrant the extra cash and a possible cold shoulder from the wife

What refresh rate are you at? The higher the refresh rate the higher the CPU load to prepare the frames with the higher refresh rates where the 7700k / 8700 shine.

If your at 60hz, then the Ryzen CPU's are more then capable.

for the extra 20 quid i think i will go for that

no good on stock cooler then??? i only have a 500w pcu aswell i suppose i would need to change that
The 8700k doesn't come with a cooler, and the stock intel cooler would be inadequate if you overclocked the 8700k (perhaps even also at stock). 8700k + GTX 1070 should be okay on a 500w PSU, but it depends on how good your PSU is and what type of 1070 you have.

500 watts would be fine, even if you overclocked both parts heavily. Of course quality is also important for a PSU, but wattage wise its fine.

thanks for the advice chaps.

think im going to go for the 8700 and a mobo. i only stream occasionally and im not that good with computers so it will prob be overkill for me anyways. plus the wife wont kill me off for spending loads extra lol.

The 8700 is really a bad price. You could get the 8700k and a budget cooler, would just limit you on overclocks. Or there is Ryzen as mentioned for bigger cost saving

well i placed the order. stuck with intel went i7 8700k with an asrock killer mobo and a water cooler i figured im gonna go 4k at some point so factored that in upped my budget.

thanks for all the advice chaps
