Yep as the title says lol...

I do occasional work from home and I have a Sonicwall (hardware firewall and VPN for those who don't know) so I can use the IP phone.

However, as I am on Virgin 50Meg I noticed that my speed has dramatically been throttled from 50Mb down to about 15Mb. The Sonicwall has caused this and I checked by removing it and just putting my PC into the cable modem and was getting full speed again.

I have been in the Sonicwall (a Pro 100 model) and have tried to make changes to allow the speed to work at full tilt but nothing.

So I have rang BT and asked for a phone line (which I have been charged heavily for but doing it over 6mths) and when that goes live I am going with O2 for ADSL as I am an O2 mobile customer. I am also thinking about getting a static IP with them as this will help greatly for my work with the VPN access.

I knew I would eventually have to get an ADSL line for the work phone so I am pleased this going to happen.

Anyone else had to do something similar? I guess this is one of the benefits (or not lol) of working from home from time to time. :D

no because my firewall is throttling my Virgin 50Meg cable connection...this way I can have my 50Meg at full speed and move the firewall and VoIP phone on ADSL so everything is balanced...

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to ditch the Sonicwall and just QoS everything going out on the cable connection with a new box?

nope cos I cannot get a VPN to work without the Sonicwall...I need the Sonicwall to VPN to my office where the PBX is stored for our phone system...so everything goes through the Sonicwall back to work...and it has to be a Sonicwall no other device...

Crazy stuff. Anyway, I think Be will price match O2 and with Be you get a static IP for no extra cost, so it sort of works out cheaper. Give them a call and have a chat.

I wouldn't go with Be for an office connection

Be and O2 are of the same company...in fact O2 own Be...and since I am an O2 customer, it would make much more sense to take the connection with them cos I get it less than other customers would who are not with O2 on their mobile plus the static IP is only under £5 a month...so I cannot complain really...one of the lads at work has two connections: 1 ADSL and 1 cable and he's had no problem...

I know. I am saying from a Be ex customer 2008 they (on my line in my personal experience) are not the best provider to go with if you use your connection for work

right I see what you mean...well we can say the same for other ISPs...everyone has their bad experiences with ISPs...I just hope I dont have much of an issue with O2 when I get it up and running. thank you tho :)

I know, I'm saying that Be price matched to O2 with a static IP is cheaper than paying for the static IP with O2, and you get the same service.

Fair point...I will have a look into them but as the previous poster said Be are not that good if using your connection for work related purposes...

So turns out I won't be going with BT or O2 now. A colleague of mine at work (also an ex BT engineer) said he went with Talk Talk and they only charged him about £60 to get the line up and running and he pays total of about £17 a month for his ADSL and PSTN and has the basic package.

Seeing as BT wanted to rob me of £123 for activating the line, I decided to cancel my order with them and go with Talk Talk. All is now sorted but it seems Talk Talk have an offer on (altho not sure) as I was told the installation would only cost £39.99 as opposed to £59.99. Either way it beats BT. :D

lol...guys I am only using it for work purposes...its just going to be used with one VoIP phone, a Sonicwall which has a VPN to my work place...that's all it is...whether I went with O2, Be, Talk Talk, Sky or whoever I don't care, cos I still have my 50Meg Virgin connection...lol...so no need to say good luck cos a lad I work with (the ex BT engineer) is also using Talk Talk for his connection for his VoIP and he has had no bother...but I thank you for your concerns...

Is it only VOIP that goes over the VPN? Any chance that what's happening is that all your net traffic is going over the VPN and your 15 Mb limit is coming from the upload at the office end?

A couple of traceroutes should be able to test the theory.

no...its not that at all...cos I was looking up MTU sizes and everything and even researched said problem I was having and I think the problem is that the Sonicwall (as old as it is) can only cope with a certain amount of bandwidth...I use to have 20Mb at my old place and didnt have any speed throttling...altho to be fair I was using a different model Sonicwall back but that's died...and yes at present everything goes over my 50Mb line but the upload from the office is no where near 15Mb so it shouldnt limit it at all from there...but it's ok I will be happy once the ADSL is on and the VPN is going over that :D
