Is the model I'm going for at £1274.20 inc VAT.

Would really appreciate some advice on the following:

  • The iPod deal is pretty good although I already have an iPhone. Which iPod would be the best choice to maximize the profit if selling it back on eBay. I'm thinking perhaps the 16GB iPod Touch?
  • I was contemplating an SSD but they don't appear to offer an advantage that justifies the ridiculous price. Would it be easy in the future to fit an SSD drive?
  • Is the anti-Glare screen worth another £40?

I would have gone for the highest spec 15"" but I can't afford it and have no real need for the extra power.

Is there anything else I should consider?

Many thanks,

Fitting the SSD should be as easy as replacing the hard drive - if you've done that before you should have no problem.

The screen is very glossy. I'm used to glossy screens but some people really hate them so it's hard to say. However, £40 is a very small fraction of the total cost so if you have any doubts then it might be worth just plumping for the anti-glare.

The screen choice is 100% personal preference and influenced by your usage environment. The anti-glare isn't necessarily £40 more because it's better; it's just a non-standard customization. I'd try to compare them in the flesh if at all possible.

I'd go with the 8GB iPod. Your discount is fixed, so it just seems like taking on more risk to spend extra. Conjecture: most potential buyers on Ebay will simply be looking to "buy an iPod" rather than having a specific model in mind.

I guess the ones in the showroom had the standard screen and they looked pretty amazing. I'll stick with glossy.

I've never fitted an HD to a Mac or laptop before but have a fair bit of experience with computers.

Is the anti-Glare screen worth another £40?
Absolutely.

I trialled a 15" MBP with the glassy screen for 14 days and couldn't get on with it, no matter where it was used. It might look more vivid and appealing at the outset but the colour and white-point are all over the shop and once calibrated properly it loses its colour richness and just becomes a mirror with a screen behind it.

Ultimately its personal choice but if the matt display on the 15" is anything like that of the 17" I'm now using, £40 is a money well spent.

Whey your getting the one i purchased about a month ago :D (and it is a really really nice laptop)

I was dubious about the glossy display from never having one like it before, but the only times i realistically notice it are when im running boot camp (which i think is a good thing) as vista looks very colourfull (in a semi good way). For me it seems osx sort of calibrates its self not to look stupid which is nice i think.

The ipod deal is on as there is supposed to be a refresh to the ipods range soon, but £140 off a touch is nothing to turn your nose up at :) (even if you have a iphone already) have a brows about on the bay and see what the touchs are going for compaired to the classics (the only 2 worth getting on the deal).

Oh and google fitting a hard drive, i dont think its hard if you shelled out for the right tools (special screw drivers) but its worth doing slowly to do right.

Anywa enjoy the awesomeness, and you might want to put up the extra £49 for the full apple care (cant rememebr what it does but its a £250 saving accoring to the recept)

is the rebate still on offer for HE discount?

edit:

nevermind, ofcourse it is! Might go blag a HE discount on a 13" MBP before it ends

When does it end? I thought the HE discount is ongoing.

I've got a choice now. If I wait till my actual birthday in a few weeks and go and buy it from Bluewater, I might be able to afford the 17"" one which would be pretty class. Question is would I really want to carry that round campus at uni and is there any point in paying all that money for a larger screen. I really don't need any of the performance enhancements.

The HE discount is ongoing but the iPod rebate is time limited.

I think a 17" is too large for you to carry around on a regular daily basis. It's mah00sive!

Another thing to note - the anti-glare screen has an aluminium trim around it, as opposed to the black of the glossy screens - it doesn't look as good IMO. (see here: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3328/3183791991_402bf45dc8.jpg)

I must admit, as stunning as the glass/black border is, I actually prefer the aluminium trim. I hope they offer the anti-glare screen on the 13" in the future (before the beginning of October as that's when I plan to buy).

Ordered.

Thank you very much for all your help and advice.

If I buy Windows 7 will I be able to install that via Boot Camp?

Cheers
