Hi there. I posted a couple of weeks back and received some outstanding help. I've now decided on a few parts and requirements and I am planning to order this PC tomorrow evening, but would like help with finalising the specification of everything else.

It should be fast, have 16gb RAM (minimum) and will be for gaming and rendering (hence the 16gb.) The other requirement is that I need a monitor and I've decided to go for a 24" 144Hz screen. I've heard too many stories of it looking off on 27" and if I were to go for a 2560x1440 I will do so when they become affordable and have 144Hz as an option.

I'd like for it to be powerful and as quiet as possible (without the cost of Water Cooling, I can't quite afford that yet.) I'd like to know I can play the latest games at 1080p and have everything cranked if possible. I kind of have a soft spot for the nVidia 780Ti GTX, but that's a huge chunk 'o budget.

The parts I have finalised (I think, any thoughts are appreciated) are:

Case: NZXT H2 Classic Silent Midi Tower Case - Black
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-036-NX&groupid=2362&catid=35
£79.99

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SW-165-MS
£74.99

Keyboard: Corsair Vengeance K95 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard - Red Switch
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-008-CS
£129.99

Mouse: Logitech G500s Laser Gaming Mouse
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=KB-229-LG&groupid=702&catid=23
£59.99

That's £345.

I was also thinking about:

Motherboard: Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-495-AS
£249.95

CPU: Intel 4820K 3.70GHz (Ivybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-502-IN
£191.99

But would like a bit of advice.

So that's £1600-ish to play with on top of the spec I like for everything, from Monitor to optical drive.

Thanks.
Sorry about this being long winded! Erk!

Hey,

The Asus P9X79 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard is a fantastic board I have the WS version of it and I cannot fault it, just update the BIOS for better uEFI compatibility as you will need to if booting uEFI :)

Are you looking at dropping a 4930k in later? if your not you may aswell get a 4770k. Because of haswell is a new architecture it out performs the 4820k.

What's uEFI? I don't know what it is, but I think I want it! :P
I've been out of the loop so long with computers. Was crazy about 7-10 years ago but just hasn't been an option since. I've had a good time with Asus in the past, the A7N8X (yep, that long ago) never gave me any problems.

In this case it's all about balancing the budget for a full built and I'm a little unsure on bang for buck etc. and immediately gravitated towards Asus due to my history with them (but I'm not afraid to go for another brand if need be.)

No, I plan on running my parts for at least 18 months before upgrading, but I'm really unsure on these things which is why I've turned to you guys at the finalisation stage.

Haswell's are faster than Ivybridge-E then I take it and what Motherboard would you recommend to go with it.

I'm assuming these are some pretty good Motherboards that will work?

Asus Z87 SABERTOOTH Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

£157.99

Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI FORMULA Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard

£219.95

I'm not really sure on the difference between them all, particularly the Hero and the Formula (other than +2 SATA and +2 USB plus a nifty metal plate?)

Once again I drifted towards ASUS as I have little experience of Gigabyte and none of ASRock. Recommendations for the build is much appreciated all.

I'd go for a Z87X-OC or Z87X-UD4H at this budget, the UD4H is now coming with a free Coolermaster Water Cooler which you could use/sell on for £30-£40

^ Hence the name 'OC' - I believe the UD range are more based around the full feature-set, though the OC is definitely not lacking in features. Unless you want the free cooler, go for the OC

PSU is up to it, yep. Seeing as you have a pre-dampened case then yeah it should be quiet, but you'll want to get yourself an aftermarket CPU cooler (maybe a water cooler AIO?) The stock cooler won't be good for overclocking

you sure you need 50 quid BD drive? I haven't used my optical drive in months.

also agree on the GPU, R9 290 Tri X would be nicer and cheaper.

Definitely food for thought with the GPU, that's a heck of a saving over the 780Ti for not that much more performance.
Would you go standard R9 290 or R290X?

I think you're right Kefan, I'm just going to use my DVD drive from another machine which works fine and save myself the £50. Wasn't thinking at the time. It's essentially for installing Windows and my USB Wi-Fi adapter and nothing else.

I believe the premium from the 290 -> 290X isn't really worth it, some cards can be flashed to a 290X (not always) but there's a small amount of performance gain for the extra money you pay for a 290X, so if I were you I'd just go for 290 :)
