Ahoy ladies(ha!) and Gentlemen,

My brother is going to build a HTPC and he, like I, have fallen in love with the OrigenAE M10 case.

He doesn't game, the only things he will be using the HTPC for will be general internet, youtube, streaming MKV's, downloading files and watching MKV's off an external hard drive.

He will only need a 200gb hard drive at most.

So can you lot give a cheap, powerful (enough) spec please?
Budget will be around 600 to 650

Thanks!

Does the £600 include the case, O/S, peripherals? I'm guessing he'll be using a TV, so no screen, but is a mobile keyboard/remote needed? How much are you factoring for the case?

Just dropping in to say this case is utter sex, and if I couldn't get something that did the same job for about 50, I'd be sorely tempted :p.

He already has a wireless keyboard he wants to use, no other accessories are needed really. Also the case comes with a remote

I think if it was 100 quid cheaper they'd sell loads

Is the £600 including the case or not? Are we looking at £600 worth of hardware inside the case, or including the case? If the latter, how much is the case (so something like £250 worth of actual hardware)?

Oh crap sorry.

£650 including the case. That basically leaves £300 for the internals

A quick couple of specs both assuming you are including the cost of the case in the build.

Option 1.

Gigabyte GA-E350N-USB3 Zacate with HD6310 iGPU - AMD Fusion (ITX) £129.98
(£108.32) £129.98
(£108.32)

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 250GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST9250410AS) £37.99
(£31.66) £37.99
(£31.66)
Sub Total : £176.64

Seagate Momentus 7200.4 250GB 7200RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (ST9250410AS) £37.99
(£31.66) £37.99
(£31.66)
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C9 1333MHz Ultra Low Voltage Dual Channel Kit (OCZ3P1333C9ELV4GK) £31.99

Assuming a price of ~£340 for the case, both of these come in under £600
Personally for what you want it for I'd be more inclined to go with option 1,option 2 is just there in case you decide you want a bit more cpu grunt.

Add another £300 and get the Asus Deluxe Fusion board when it finally comes out and a 256GB SSD for a totally silent solution :D

stop with the temptations :(

I'm still really unsure about how to go about media streaming! Its slowly killing me!

In the living room I will set up Acer Revo with XMBC and linux for the parentals and what not.

In my room I'll go for the HTPC route, and that will be in a few months hopefully. A SSD would be so sweet!

That is an amazing copy minus the VFD, think that could be quite popular...

Hell, might have to get one myself to finally replace my ancient hi-fi. Mini-ITX with a decent sound card... Hmm...

If you go onto AV Forums, there is a lot more information on the company there.

Just out of interest would you be using an external DAC?

Unfortunately I'm no kind of audiophile, so had to look up what DAC means. Is there a major benefit in one over just using analogue outs on the card? (I guess so, otherwise you wouldn't have one).

To be honest, it won't be anything of über quality, but just a nice replacement with a working DVD/CD drive...

From the reading I've done on them they can be excellent or indifferent.
stuff like DAC magic are supposed to be very good. As long as you have a good system then a DAC is a worthwhile investment

In time I'll end up purchasing one but need to get the bass perfected first.

If you go the i3, Gigabyte GA-H55N-USB3 route, then make sure the Origen AE M10 case comes fitted with the PX150-P2 version of the power supply board, or you'll run into trouble with clearance of the motherboard ATX plug with the capacitors on the power supply. Your case supplier should be able to contact Origen AE direct to ensure he has the newer boards, they are easy to swap out.
I'm running an M10 with an i3 540 / Zotac H55 motherboard. I replaced the stock 60mm case fans with Papst versions as they are quieter. Also using a 60GB Vertex 2e and stream movies from my WHS.
I also replaced the i3 stock cooler with a Silverstone low profile cooler as this was quieter also.
Great cases though and really look the part under the TV !
