Origin Offering Deep Discounts On Many Games… Er?

So figure this one out. You may remember that twelve days ago, there was quite a lot of discussion over EA’s Origin store boss saying they wouldn’t be engaging in “deep discount” sales on their Steam-rivalling service. David DeMartini (whose name sounds like he should be the star of a Bond spoof) said, “We won’t be doing that,” when asked about such services. Explaining why he added, “I just think it cheapens your intellectual property.”

Today on Origin, Dragon Age: Origins is available for £5. That’s discounted from £40 – an incredible 87.5% off!

Spore is 75% off, as is Darksiders, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, and Battlefied: Bad Company 2. 66% savings can be found on Alice: Madness Returns and Darkspore, while Dead Space 2, Shank, Battlefield Bad Company 2 Vietnam, Mirror’s Edge, The Saboteur, Gotham City Imposters, Gatling Gears, and Batman: Arkham Asylum are all half price.

That’s half the price of their current Origin prices, of course. Not half the price of their original prices. In fact, most of those games are now available for 87.5% off their original launch price. That’s an awful lot of intellectual property EA are cheapening today.

“Occasionally there will be things that are on sale you could look for a discount,” said DeMartini less than two weeks ago. “Just don’t look for 75 percent off going-out-of-business sales.”

Uh-oh!

We’ve contacted EA to ask them why the sudden change of heart. Cheers to Lewie P for the spot.

I had NFS Carbon on Origin, had to download it twice, after it saved the first one to my temp folder ( despite being directed to my downloads folder)

Installed the game after a 2 day download. Game refuses to work. :/ Angry bunny :p

ita not a sudden change of heart shift 2 was £5 for a short time awhile back aswell , some of the dead space games were the same

because its cool to hate EA

just like some people think its cool to like apple and hollister

Well, there is also the fact that leading up to a sale, they will deny one is taking place. Either the EA execs don't know what their business is doing, or more likely they wantes to stop people "waiting for the sale"

It is because people are intrinsically stupid to keep any sort of bias about their person, they only have themselves to blame.

It is simple socio-economics, if the item sucks, my opinion of the creator diminishes, if they suck consecutively, i stop buying.

Due to Biowares demise, it is no longer viable.

I absolutely love RPS. I bet half the industry hates them though :)

I reckon there's a bit of machiavellian infighting going on at EA. "Ha! Bob's just done an interview saying we'll never do deep discounts on our games! I'll sell a load of the damn things off cheap, make a fortune for the company, and discredit Bob forever!! The senior executive vice presidentship will be mine, I tell you! Mine!!!!!" *dribble*

DA Origins is still overpriced, as it is £3.92 on Amazon :p (ex delivery though)

Surely they weren't selling it at £40 before? It's a fairly old game now - I picked up my copy off Amazon last year for <£10 . . .

Yea, but on VM 50Mbit/s I was playing it within 40 mins.....

To be honest, I am so in favour of Steam I would pay more for a game on the Steam store over Origin.

I wish EA hadn't bothered with Origin and just gave the customers what they wanted.
