I bought Mafia which is now on Steam for £6.99

I don't see what all the fuss is about. so far its been very boring
though, i have just started I admit.

it took me 20 attempts to get past the taxi part!. the compass is poo it takes me the wrong way half the time get to the coast then notice I need to go across a bridge.

please tell me what's fun about it when it starting getting fun... the driving is really annying me personally

opp wrong section mod please move :(

Wrong section but glad you posted here first as otherwise I wouldn't have read it :p

I too don't get the Mafia fuss, I've tried playing it several times but found the gameplay, handling and environments incredibly tedious. Just not my cup of coffee.

It's overrated by nostalgia mafia fanboys. To put it bluntly. I also bought it and was very dissapeared. Just you wait till you get to the race! You have to race a car which is about 4 times faster then your taxi and it handles just as bad. Have fun, they even patched it to take out the glitch that allows you to get past it. I rage quit and never played it again.

I think the game was good in its time possibly, i dunno, GTA3 was around the same time and thats far superior. Though I've seen many say mafia was better.

I'm glad I'm not alone!

I bought it a little while ago for a few quid, and just found it frustrating. I got to a part with a petrol station and some dogs or something, then gave up. It was a bit pap IMO.

Did anyone find the burning of those cars really hard? It's like the first mission you do and you have a bassball bat and 2 moletovs and they tell you to go destroy 3 cars gaurded by like 6 armed men. It's ludercras. I went and found another gangster and killed him to get his gun. Made it 100 times easyer because quite frankly taking a baseball bat to a gun fight is stupid.

That bit is really lame. But the most lame part is the fact that you don't keep the guns you found.

It's not often I say this... "others opinions" and all that, but you are all very very very wrong.

It was excellent in its time, it probably doesn't shine quite so well now.

Mafia fanboys? Lol.

Im sorry but have you two actually played it recently? It is just horrible. The controls are terrible. I never disputed it might have been good in its time but it sure isn't good now and yet all these "mafia nostalgia fanboys" as I said go around saying its a good game and people buy it and find out its terrible.

You missed out the nostalgia part. Thats the important part. They played it long ago and still think its a good game when it's not. I love mafia things, gangsters: organised crime is one of my favourites that I still play and I love the movies. But damn this is a BAD game now days.

Most reviews haven't really been that impressed. I think the general consensus is that it's pretty and well animated but its not got a whole lot there. While some of the missions are good there isn't really enough of them and free roaming is pointless. A game worth playing, but not outstanding I believe most would say.

Of course it's crap now. Back in 2002 it was in a league of its own. To be honest there's no point in playing it now unless you can look past the graphics which I doubt.

I'm not far into it at all and have been set the mission where I have to drive to the hospital. That's where I, hopefully, temporarily lost interest. I might go back to it, not sure. Will buy the second game once it's around a tenner.

It's not the graphics. I still play:

Gangsters: organized crime (terrible graphics)
Dungeon keeper 2
Age of empires 2
Theme hospital

quite regularly. The fact is that the game is just not made well. Years ago it got away with it because people didn't know what they did now.

The combat is terrible and getting through a door can be a chalange. a lot of the controls are just like, what? What on earth made you think I'd want to use that as the key for it? ETC. Had to remap all the keys, especialy for driving. The camera angle for driving is also just nasty, not to menchen the handling.

The missions are a pain, it's as if the game takes fun in laughing at you driving all the way across the map every time.

My beef isn't that hte game is bad now. It's that people think the games good still without having actually played it again and told others it was worth the buy and it was just a waste of money. At least It was for me and several others in this thread.

many people completed mafia before the patch was out there was no game stopping bugs just one mission was hard but doable and it wasnt a taxi race it was the race track in the old school racing car i managed it by cutting over the chicane but it was very hard.

the actual game itself was extremly good compared to the majority of titles at the time obviously compared to modern games its going to seem horrible as will a lot of games people remember fondly.

i'd imagine the max payne games seem right crap now

Whether it be films, music or games, whatever, invariably I find that it's not the same when you 'go back' and play / watch something or listen to an old track. Apart from Mafia I recently played Painkiller and something was missing, wasn't much like when I played it in 2004.
