Original Unreal - crashing when change resolution

Hi all

Yesterday my girlfriend was doing a bit of charity shop browsing and stumbled across a copy of Unreal. Knowing how much I enjoy FPS games, she got it for me.

I have played it in the past and thoroughly enjoyed it so thought I'd give it a go. It's installed fine and when I run it, it opens fine however when I change the video resolution to 800 x 600 (the highest resolution listed) it causes the game to crash. I've tried looking it up but all I've managed to find is that yes this is a problem but I've not found any solutions other than editing the unreal.ini file which I shall try this evening.

If this works, is it possible to input resolutions higher than 800 x 600?

Also, are there any patches/upgrades I should install to get it running well/looking good etc?

Any help very much appreciated.

A month ago I did the blast from the past thing and installed Unreal. It was my 1st 3D pc game, ran with a 3DFx card.....ooooh the power :D

I think you have to patch it to get any sort of use out of it...

Was nice to play for a while, but games have certainly moved on! Fond memories tho.

Install the unrealpatch226final.exe for starters if you haven't already, it should definitely allow you to use resolutions over 800x600 via menu selection never mind tweaking the ini. Also you might like to choose a different renderer to use (e.g. D3D, OpenGL etc).
