i'm getting 60-70C in Orthos 'Blend' Test is this right or should the temp not go over 55C

Its a little high as temps in blend are usually a little lower than in Large or Small FFt's. Try not to go over 60c for long periods of time.

Because kittens start to die all over the world......

and its generally regarded as being bad for the cpu (AMD and Intel).

Well, I have to start this by saying that 99.9% of everything I've read that you've posted makes total sense and I reckon you know your stuff, but the chips are designed to run hot. They throttle themselves back and shut themselves down if they are over-heating. 60C is the case air temperature where Intel say you won't be able to cool the CPU, not the top CPU temperature. On the Quad-cores the T-junction temperature is 100C. Why? Because Intel know the chips are going to run over 85C which was the T-junction temperature on the dual-cores. I like kittens, but my CPU stays maxed out 24/7 at 68-70C.

Blend dosn't max out a cpu temp though. I would think that if he is getting 70c in blend then he could well be getting +10c or even more (depending on cooling) in small and large fft's. This is of course IF he is using TAT, if not and is using a motherboard sensor i.e PCprobe/easytune/speedfan etc rather than a core sensor(CoreTemp/TAT) then the cpu could well be running much higher than reported. Also consider that it is the middle of winter at present and temps are generally lower now than in the summer. So what might be fine now will most likely cause the cpu to throttle or worse cause damage come summer time when a whole host of 'my pc is overheating' threads will no doubt start up as people configured there shiny new pcs in the winter and dont expect temps to alter even when there is a change in ambient temps ;).

What's your CPU?

hi there its a Quad Core Extreme Edition QX6700 been running it @ 3.2 on orthos test for coming up to 4 hours now and its seems ok ;) but temps do jump to 65-70C

I absolutely despair of you. I'm going to get my colleague - the ex-Intel salesman to come and see you and explain to you how you cannot damage an Intel processor with high temperatures. Honest guv'nor you can't. They just throttle back and shut down. If you have TM1&TM2 turned on in the BIOS they even shut down cleanly, like pressing the S3 sleep button.

Do you remember last summer? It was hilarious. "My computer keeps shutting down because of the heat. If I turn the fans up, I can't sleep!" :D Roll on Global Warming. I'm ready with my air conditioned home office!

A chip without a heatsink would surely burn itself up no? Ok this is taking things to the extreme but I'm sure I saw a vid of it somewhere(albeit an AMD) and anyone with any sense would not run a cpu without some form of cooling. I also read that heat can also contribute to electron migration (obviously not as much as voltage but heat does have its part to play). Hence the fact people who have phase and run 1.7 through there cpu's do not kill them as someone who ran the same voltage on air would most likely do. I'm not a physicist so I can't go into nor completley understand all the intricities of it all, I appologise for my ignorance :). I'm sure the intel guy you know is partially correct in that a cpu will not die from heat, at least not the temps we are talking about but surely running a cpu for years @ 80c cannot be good, especially in the long term as this would conribute to the degridation of the cpu.

Yeah I remember last year...and the year before etc and I dare say it will be the same this year. I might run a book on which Q will be posted most.

q1. How do I apply as5?
q2. Why is my PC overheating?
