Not sure why it does this but this has happened with all of my recent computers but if you leave a usb memstick plugged in while the computer is booting it can fail to boot the os. It comes up with Error BOOTMGR is missing as if the hard drive is corrupted. Take out the usb memstick reboot and it instantly works.

I've done a google search and this issue seems common with some usb devices, yet if the mem stick is plugged in while windows 7 is running everything is fine.

Is it because the OS is for some reason trying to boot from the memory stick?

Evoss - It was set to Hard Drive 1st device and CDROM second device

drbx19 - No the only thing that was on it was readyboost as I was testing something

As I said this has happened on all my previous systems too, It's nothing major Just don't have the usb memory stick plugged in on boot. It's just odd that vista and win 7 feels the need to boot from it, when clearly it's not set as such

Never come across that before and i leave my stick in regularly. Lexar JD Firefly 8GB.

In your google search was there any common factors? I just find it a bit STRANGE!

usb keys can be recognised as removable hdd, and are often referred to as that, so its likely that your BIOS is booting that that HDD first, then your normal ones.

This is likely because you can install windows from a USB key (same as CD) so often the standard boot order settings for a mobo are set up to boot from them first.
