For some strange reason, when I boot up my pc I get a choice of XP Professional or XP Professional (setup) which is presumable incomplete as i get an error message about missing files. i have no idea where this second entry came from. How do I remove the choice or at least tell the system to load up only the first option?

You need to edit your boot.ini file and remove the line pointing to the "setup" version.

I'd probably do it the safer way through using msconfig though (start>run>msconfig>boot)

An ever safer way is to go to "Control Panel" "system" "advanced" " "startup and recovery" and untick the box marked "time to display list of operating systems"

Trouble was, it selected the second of the two options so it wouldnt have given me time to select the right one. Ive made xp pro the default now anyway.
