I've bought a new external drive to use with my MacBook but am unsure what to format it as...

I would ideally like to use it between both Windows and Mac, in the past having used NTFS drivers to do so... however would it not just be easier to format it as Ex-FAT?

What are the benefits of NTFS over Ex-FAT, if any?

oh, so Ex-FAT is only really suitable for solid state drives? and would not be compatible with other devices, e.g. TV, Xbox etc?

This is pretty annoying for such a simple exercise, as I don't wish to pay for NTFS drivers like Tuxera but at the same time just want to be able to access my files on both Windows and OS X.

I use exfat on all my external drives. Usually PS3/Xbox and TV all require FAT32 or to format the drive on insertion so I just have some pen drives for that.

With exfat you wont be able to put an installation of OSX on it, or Windows. They require journaled or NTFS. Also I noticed windows backups won't work on a non-ntfs drive. Basically anything that is OS specific needs to be formatted in the way the OS wants.
