Okay so I am having some trouble setting this up how I would like.

I can view folders shared on my PC from my Mac but I cant write data to them. I want to transfer a large file over the network to the PC but I cant seem to get it working where I have rights to write to any of theses folders.

Help?

XP or Vista? Have you ticked the "users can write to this folder" option?

And to above, yes you can. I share various folders to keep one copy of my project work on my main machine and access them fully using my MB. The OS handles the conversion of data, client OS has no concept of filesystems on the server.

Right click on the folder you want to share, then add your username as an "Owner". When you try to access the share on OS X, make sure you use the same username as you log onto Vista with and you should get full access to the folder.

Okay when im sending files across they start to copy and a few have successfully. one file that is 3.5gig in size sends about 3.1 gig across and then I get a copy pop up error saying

The operation cannont be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.
Also these files appear on windows but nothing shows in the window on the os x system. files just disapear but on the windows machine they are there.

I am set up as the owner and I have logged in as it on the os x machine.

it sends smaller files.

I have got the items showing up in leopard now. I had to fiddle with a setting in the windows folder share.
I had to enter a share name. The folders called "sharing" and the share name is "general" I can not connect to "general" and the files show up. Just waiting to see if it will send this large file now

OS X can't write to NTFS.

But I don't know if it makes a difference over a network though, as you said you can copy small files over.
