Oscar Nominations

I always stay up and watch the Oscars. Despite the rather overblown affair they do make a good show of it, and for an added bonus you can always down a shot every time someone mentions Jack Nicholson and they cut to him sitting in the audience with his shades on. Last year was good fun, with Jonathan Ross and Rob Bryden taking the mick.

I'll be interested to see what nominations come up too - Walken cost me £10 in 2003 after losing out to Chris Cooper in Adaptation, so maybe I can make my money back this time!

I agree with the BBC's Best Film listing, although I do feel that Crash should be in there.

I can't see beyond Heath Ledger for the Best Actor, even though Philip Seymour Hoffman seems to be odds on, I think Reese Witherspoon for Best Actress, Rachel Weisz for Best Supporting Actress and George Clooney for Best Supporting Actor.

Ang Lee will be Best Director as well as Brokeback Mountain winning Best Film.

I don't know if I should be cheering on Wallace & Gromit, or Howl's Moving Castle as the best animated feature.
Wallace and Gromit :D

I've still to see Crash, Good Night, and Good Luck and Munich, all 3 are films I'm really interested in seeing though. Not even sure if Good Night, and Good Luck is out yet though :/ Or at least not round here.

That's one of the main things I don't like about the Oscars, they tend to only recognise films from the last few months that are often only just out over here. When Sideways was revealed as being up for a few gongs last year I had to go and look it up as I hadn't even heard of it!

Ahh just looked it up, according to IMDB it's being released on the 17th February....but according to the UCI site (only cinema near me) they've never heard of it, so bet it doesn't get shown here

Nominees for Best visual effects:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
King Kong
War of the Worlds

I'm amazed that Star Wars Episode 3 isn't in the running....it just got nominated for Best Make-up!

I'm guessing because Star Wars Episode 3 was a terrible, terrible film and a lot of the effects were terribly ropey (the unmasked clonetroopers a perfect example).

Kiera for best actress? Pull the other one..

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Jake Gyllenhaal for Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Supporting Role? Am I completely mixed up or was Jack Twist the main character telling the story in Brokeback Mountain - doesn't it start at the beginning from Jack Twists point of view watching Ennis waiting by the trailer?
