OSX and Flash drives

does anyone know why when i delete stuff from a flash drive in OSX, it doesn't actually free up the space??

When i look under windows it has a recover folder where i need to delete everything from there too. It is a PITA.

depends what you're doing. When you delete something from OSX, it puts it in .Trashes, are you emptying the trash when you delete something?
