New mac user here - trying to install VLC. Downloaded it last night, it goes in the stack, and i click it and it seemed to install. But I never got an icon anywhere, it was just there in the right click menu under 'open with'. But the player worked. It was also listed in finder sidebar as a device?? Does that make any sense? It had some files in it when I clicked it.

Anyway I removed it somehow from the side bar. But then there was no more vlc, so installed it again, but now it just does the same but with a blank folder and no right click open on video files. I have downloaded it again and tried to install but I get the same result. Im totally confused as to whats going on - being a windows user, I find it all very unintuitive at the moment - help please.

EDIT* also why is the install file listed in the stack, but there is nothing in the downloads or documents folder in finder? I also have no drives on my desktop or icons.

Not quite sure what you mean by "stack"

- download VLC dmg file from homepage
- double click to it mounts and opens
- drag VLC icon onto the Applications shortcut in the window so VLC is copied to you local applications folder
(- Unmount mounted dmg file)
- run VLC from applications folder or by rightclicking on file and selecting open with

Although personally I prefer MplayerX from the App Store.

Either press the eject button next to the volume in finder or drag the mounted volume to the rubbish bin and it will change to an eject icon, drag the volume onto it and voila :)

Yep that seemed to work. Its so weird coming from windows. But fun! Will checkout MplayerX now.

Thanks :)

How do you make a player the 'default' player? And MplayerX is really good thx :) VLC in the trash now lol. But VLC still comes up in the open with menu - how do I remove it?

*EDIT* - VLC now gone by itself.

And for anyone else (in the future) to make default application/player: Right click, Get Info, Open With section, Change All button.

MplayerX has really messed up digital sound distortion for a lot of vids I play. VLC works fine. Does anyone know how to stop VLC/OSX Lion from caching the watched videos in a 'recently veiwed' list?

As for the OP - sounds like you were just mounting the disk image, that's whats appearing in the sidebar.

Just mount the image (double click), open it up in finder, then drag the VLC icon/program to your Applications folder (on the dock). Then Click the 'eject' icon on the VLC disk image in the sidebar and then delete the disk image from your downloads folder.
