A friend of mine has asked me give him a hand updating an old G5 tower he has. One of the things he needs in OS X 10.5.

What is the legal standpoint on using my installation disc?

I know with windows you have a license key that they check, but I don't remember using one when I reformatted my Mac.

It suspect I am able to use my c.d. but I'm not sure if I'm allowed? Can come someone please shed some light on this for me?

Thanks

The disc that came with your Mac won't work on his computer unless it's the same model. If you have a retail disc then it will work but the licence with it is only for one computer. There are no serial number checks but it's breaking the licence conditions. It'll effectively be software piracy.

When Snow Leopard comes out I could just buy one copy and install it on both my Mac but I'd be breaking the conditions so I'm going to buy a family pack instead.

Feek is right, to be totally honest there is no need to pirate software when its good, its only crap like windows that should be pirated, although sadly I did buy my copy.
