osx/macbook + common symbols

how in the name of zeus, do you type the symbol for number, i.e. a "hash", and the symbol for squared, i.e. a small "2" in the upper-third of the character space? driving me nuts1 :/
 
I remember I tried to find this out in Oct 2005, I found how to do it, I've forgotten now of course :(. As for the small two no idea. I'll keep searching for now.

It's worse for me - I've got a US keyboard on the MBP and an UK external one for when I'm at my desk. Really bloody confusing sometimes...

I prefer the US keyboard on the MBP as it has a sensible sized Enter key. All the function keys are fully labelled up rather than having symbols - useless Americans ;)
